A Sky Full of Stars 025

  • Scarlet: I’m hungry.
  • Tibor: Me too.
  • Tibor: What do we have left?
  • Scarlet: Nothing.
  • Tibor: We don’t have anything to sell either, except for my gun and knife.
  • Scarlet: No way! Who knows when we’ll need them again!
  • Tibor: Maybe I’ll find a new job next week. But until then, we only have one option left…
  • Tibor: Scarlet, see if you can find a few small wooden boards somewhere.
  • Scarlet: Okay.

  1. I’m guessing it’s begging?

  2. You can’t eat wood, Tibor…

  3. He could borrow money from Marek. Or not.

    1. Sorry, Marik. Autocorrect.

  4. There seems to be nothing in the way of workers’ compensation, social services, or even organized charities (religious or not). Seems anachronistic in a fairly advanced society.

    1. This feels to me like it is a post collapse society.

They had their golden age long in the past, and still have some of its benefits or developments, but not all of them. Dark ages Europe still had a lot of the things that Rome left behind, their architecture and roads did not just collapse overnight, but not everything.

Or they are just not reached that point yes, since it is fairly recent (1910s IIRC for a lot of the world), and a war would stress the resources available.

    2. Considering the climate crisis, we can’t really expect a modern safety network. That said, if you look at a medieval society, getting permanently disabled usually meant you’re now a beggar, but I’m not so sure the society would leave a temporarily disabled person who is expected to be back and working in a couple of months behind like this. It also seems strange that if the society doesn’t have this safety net, that it has so strong anti child labor laws. It’s okay if people starve, but we must protect children from work.
That said, this can make sense. If we assume things got bad pretty recently historically speaking, then it makes sense that the society would have a mix of old-fashioned and modern traits. For example, Japan and South Korea became modern over a very short time historically and are a weird mix of modern and outdated laws and customs.
Right now I have no idea if the comic has an extensive world building or if the author is just winging it.

      1. It’s possible the things got bad pretty recently speaking normally. Like, that it was much better before the war which happened – or maybe STARTED – few years ago.

Frankly, I think the worldbuilding for Gaia was better.

  5. I guess they’ll paint a board and beg T_T

    1. Either a snare or something less nutritious. I’ve made a soup out 3 different cans of veggies and tomato paste and some salt and pepper, it was at least filling. Got me through a rough patch…
