It looks like St Valentines Day is cancelled. Scarlet’s driven off further, at least for the winter.
I’m sure we’ll see Julius in the future. After all, he’d make a good cut-to character to tell why area 1 is getting destroyed, while Scarlet is safe-ish in area 2.

But sacrificed by _who_ is the big question. His foolish parents, the aggressive Grondians, the hungry townspeople, an armed conflict between the northwest and the town, or Scarlet who has moved past him and shoots him anyway? Dying why is as important to a story as who kills him and where it happens.

This is the right decision, no matter how sad. Taking Julius against his parents’ wishes would have amounted to kidnapping and created a whole new world of trouble.

I just don’t think that decision would make any sense. They ARE wealthy, it seems unlikely they’re going to starve as compared to Tibor/Scarlet. Maybe they’ll have to move or something, but not starve. If Julius goes with Tibor/Scarlet, there IS a risk he’ll starve or die some other way – especially considering Scarlet has had some survival training (she can shoot at least) and Julius probably has led a pretty cozy life. He might even be a liability and Tibor would decline his coming along even if it was offered!

The mother is clearly there to make sure that Julius doesn’t run away with Scarlet. And to prove that adult supervision exists.

One of two things is probably going to happen:
1. (The more unpleasant) Julius will have died by the time she gets back.
2. (The more dramatic) It will be a lot more than a year before they see each other again. Either Julius (with or without his family) has to leave before Scarlet returns, and/or Scarlet will be unavoidably diverted onto another path and won’t be able to return when she intended to.

I wouldn’t eliminate the option of the good old role reversal yet either. Like, they come back after some adventures, having managed to get decent funds by Scarlet’s smarts and find Julius (and family, if not dead or conscripted), now poor homeless beggars on the streets. Possibly followed by them taking along Julius next time.

I don’t think they will be beggars … however, refugees, that could happen easily. Refugees on road, who technically have money but have trouble finding anyone who can sell them anything … while Scarlet wouldn’t have more money, but will have more resources.
