A Sky Full of Stars 065

  • Scarlet: Tibor killed an armed Grondan soldier with his dagger to rescue me!
  • Mine owner: Impressive, indeed.
  • Scarlet: And I am quite good at shooting!
  • Mine owner: You are good at shooting?
  • Scarlet: Yes!
  • Mine owner: Show me!
  • Mine owner: Not bad…
  • Mine owner: But I need only one guard, not two.
  • Scarlet: The two of us combined won’t need more food than a single wolf. It’s like you’ll get me for free!
  • Mine owner: All right, it’s worth a try.
  • Scarlet: Yay!
  • Tibor: Thank you.
  • Mine owner: In your family, Scarlet’s calling the shots, huh?
  • Tibor: Well, you can’t--
  • Scarlet: I do!

  1. One for knives, one for pistols. And they both didn’t seem to have picked up on that pun.
We still don’t know what they mine there. An iron mine makes sense, since it’s used in pretty much all forms of industry. A silver mine would have been good, if only for the gag of dropping the red-haired Scarlet into the so-called blue mud of silver deposits. She’d get some teasing over “A blue haired redhead!” as she squelches to the showers. A salt mine makes a lot of sense, since there’s a lot of roads to salt. And food, I guess.
Where is the smelter, how many very close houses are vent-heated by it, and how safe is it to live there?

  2. Letting the smart one make the decisions is a sign of wisdom in my book.

    1. Scarlet is intelligent, but usually not wise. The best would probably be if Tibor made decisions with Scarlet’s council.

  3. Well, it’s been six years since Tibor resignedly said: “Apperantly, I can’t even assert myself against a six-year-old.” (SFOS, #013) And Scarled is 12yo now. 🙄

    1. I don’t think Scarlet’s age is confirmed, but she should be close to 12.

      1. Yes, that’s also what I had in mind for this story arc. Glad to see that the artwork turned out just right regarding Scarlet’s age.

  4. It looks like they are in a good position to survive now. The plan to go for less population and more cold area may have paid off. Maybe they do in colder areas grow more Bloomrabi and less Firebeats and such was less affected by the cold? The setting page list Bloomrabi as more resilent.

  5. Nice! Transscripts are back!
So I choose to have a look at the german version of today’s panel and I learned that the soldier killed by Tibor was a vixen.

  6. Nine-year-old Scarlet could not find an ordinary job. Now twelve-year-old Scarlet is employed to eventually shoot people. Huh, that’s worse than Manchester or Detroit in the 19th century!
In the service of a capitalist magnate, she might be asked to shoot desperate hungry people or striking workers. That would certainly be in fierce conflict with her sense of justice.

    1. Why assume that the mine is run by a “capitalist magnate”? Maybe it’s run for the communal good with appropriate public oversight. And last I checked, communist/socialist countries needed at LEAST as many guards as capitalist ones (and often more). Anyway, the ideal role of a guard is to create a setting where no one is shot because their presence enforces norms of public order.

      1. Well, we’ll see what ideas Novili has. He’s the boss. 😎

      2. In the transcript, the man who employs them is labeled as the “Mine owner.” So that’s capitalism.

    2. If she is asked to shoot people, it’s likely in the service of not making the food crisis worse.

  7. The last two panels here remind me of the episode, number 39 I think, where Scarlet and Julius got together. She is AMAZINGLY expressive with her eyes closed. Good art work, Elli!

    1. Elli is also great at using both the human elements of the foxes and wolves and their animal elements (ears and tails primarily) to convey emotions as well.

  8. Hm, so the gun is cratering objects. Generally align with charged particle beam effect.
