Machine Girl 005

  • Iona: Hey, Mister, why are you crying?
  • Tibor: It’s… because of Scarlet, my adoptive daughter.
  • Iona: Why? Is she sick?
  • Tibor: Yes, in her heart. She’s very, very sad.

  1. New friends for Scarlet? 😀 She needs some friends her own age. She needs to be a kid for a bit, play soccer, etc.

  2. The diagnosis is correct

  3. Novil has includ d the names of these new characters so hopefully one or more of them will be a recurring character. But there’s no mention of them under characters and nothing yet from Machine Girl yet so perhaps he’s not updated the character list.
BTW Novil, I want to tell you have much I lik your webcomic Scarlet. It’s a far higher calibre than many others I read or have read. Elli already knows how I love her art as I’ve written quite a few comments and questions on Tistow. I think by having someone else do the art work while you concentrate on the story is a good choice, providing for the best in both areas.

    1. He’s also previously included the names of one-shot characters with a speaking part. These may only be around for one game of soccer.

      1. No, I understand that. ☺️ What I meant is — under the main large title at the top of the page, there’s a menu that includes Setting, Glossary, etc and also includes Characters. So yes, even someone who showed up for one page is listed. BUT Novil hasn’t updated it in a while. The last listed character name is from the section A Sky Full Of Stars and none from Machine Girl yet. Novil adds when the character first shows up and if they’re a one-shot appearance. I’m pretty sure he’s quite busy and I think he also has a secular job. So we’ll have to wait and see.

    2. I hope so. Iona is cute! 🦊

      1. How do you know, who is who?

        1. Macareux Moine

Obviously from the transcript – I see it now

  4. She is very sick, both in body and mind. There may be help coming though.

    1. There has to be. Tibor is clearly at his wits end and getting desperate. We also are kind of out of support cast, they are all dead or live elsewhere. Except possibly Tibors old friend from work, can’t remember where he went.

If these are just normal town kids, hearing how Tibor and Scarlet survived the famine would make her sound very adventurous already by comparison. Kids tend to o be fascinated by that sort of thing.

      1. “Kids tend to be fascinated by that sort of thing.” Ha. hahaha. IRL there’s a 90% chance that the only response you’d get from three teens at the park is either “Can I have some money?” or “Can I borrow a smoke?”

        1. Well, it is a fantasy. Also not sure about tobacco, have we seen anyone smoke? They DO have alcohol …

        2. You’re comments (and ALMOST ALL your previous comments on this web comic) are negative and pessimistic. This is NOT real life and most of those we’ve met, even briefly, are more concerned and far less jaded than many, though not all, people we meet now.

The fact that they looked over at Tibor and rather shrugging and making some semi-sarcastic remark like “What’s with him?” they stopped playing came over and asked why he was crying, then asked “Why? Is she sick?” Most we’ve met are ‘deeper’ than you suggest. In a world that’s undergoing turmoil and food shortages, most show a greater awareness of others and concern for others. Really — I wonder why you even bother reading Scarlet.

  5. Hope is on its way! 🌻

  6. The people on this planet are mostly wonderful and kind. It’s very nice and one of the reasons I love reading it.

  7. I think this is the third time being sad in front of helpful strangers passing by will work out for Tibor in exactly the way he needs it.

  8. Why read Scarlet? It’s good to read things so pure and innocent that they’re totally alien. I admit that my point of view is more coloured by real life than the view held by others.
As for a pessimistic comment history, don’t forget sardonic and dry, too. I may have made a few cracks about Tibor ending up as a fur coat, or his parents eating Julius, but it’s not like they were main characters at the time. As for Scarlet/Machine as a whole, I like my Science fiction so hard that I learn from it, and my Fantasy, well, it is less saving the town and more “How do I bathe in the dragon’s blood?” I prefer the language clean- don’t swear at someone, murder him with words.
Such a long story told about a freezing colony world is interesting to me- if only Novil would get Scarlet back to the main plotline, that is. It would have been more logical to have discovered a Summer Machine in the mines, than in the estate they’re living in now. Cave systems, and all that.

    1. It takes all kinds to make a world. In fact, there are far way more kinds that we are aware of, I guess this is what makes sense of “ars longa, vita brevis”, because actually if one can live until 80-90 years old (world record 122, if I remember well), vita is not that brevis, in despite of ars being far longa than it. Anyway, Scarlet has and had very few friends, so the loss of them is more devastating.

About the Machine, I think it was a vision, or a projection, hologram, injected memory, whatever, so it makes sense she saw it just before her parents’ death. This helped to survive the loss.
