Machine Girl 034

  • Vreni: I’m feeling dizzy…
  • Scarlet: That’s caused by my arguments, which are currently embedding themselves into your brain. Soon you won’t even remember having had a different opinion.
  • Vreni: That can’t be true!
  • Scarlet: But it is. Such is the power of the fire girl!
  • Iona: Scarlet can be scary. Scary!
  • Scarlet: Once Baako kisses you tenderly, you’ll be glad to have changed your mind.
  • Scarlet:
  • Vreni:
  • Scarlet: If you have a daughter, you’ll have to name her after me!
  • Vreni: Oh my god, Scarlet! Cut it out!

  1. How can you kiss tenderly with someone who has jaws? 🙄

    1. Is the s or the c silent in scent? Try to say pirates like you say pilates. Try to say laughter in the same way you say daughter.

      1. The Tough Coughs As He Ploughs the Dough …

    2. (Almost) all mammals have lips …

    3. I hate to break it to you, but you have jaws too. Unless you’ve been in a terrible accident, in which case I’m sorry to hear that.

      1. Well, English is not my native language. Aside from the exact words (human lips vs. wolf snout?), you know what I mean. Human kissing, lip to lip, is a special act. It’s important that our faces are flat, we don’t have elongated snouts.

        1. You’ve never seen a dog nuzzle its owner’s face?

        2. Nuzzling is not kissing.

        3. I had the same thought, but we can see that Iona can make an “:o” face which I don’t think a normal wolf mouth would be able to do? So their mouths must be different from wolves we’re familiar with in some ways. Still, the elongated face would be kinda weird probably?

    4. It’s true that real life canines have lips which are less flexible that human’s, so they can’t make a proper kiss, so they lick to show affection. But with different lips and teeth, they are also incapable of making many sounds of human speech. And in this world, foxes and wolves speak same as humans (at least it was never mentioned otherwise). Also, in the last panel of “Machine Girl 031”, Baako makes very human-like “round mouth”. So, I assume, this world’s foxes and wolves have human’like lips.

      1. This is one of those classic “stop overthinking it” questions. If you can accept the fantasy world setting in which wolves and foxes can make human speech, and interbreed with humans, whether or not they can kiss is sort of a pointless thing to worry about.

        1. FuryoftheStars

Yes, *very* much a “stop overthibking it”….

        2. FuryoftheStars

          And of course I have a typo….

      2. Thank you, yes, this is a situation where one can easily suspend disbelief. Whatever genetic engineering turned the old colonists fuzzy also let them keep their muscular, enunciating, kissy-naughty monkey lips. Done. It’s a lot easier to swallow than the skeletal changes to elongate a snout in the first place.

    5. I think snout would be the appropriate usage here, rather than jaws (which you did hit in your elaboration elsewhere)
as for the how? I’m not sure myself. I imagine their anatomy isn’t quite the same as canines in our world. can really do anything with fiction

  2. What is Vreni actually doing with that screwdriver? Is he trying to separate some part that could be sold? 🤔

    1. Vreni is female.

      1. Yeah, lapsus calami! 😫

      2. Hegel mentions being ESL in another comment. original language likely lacks gendered pronoun distinction

        1. I thought it was just a typo. Which clearly happens around here.

  3. Better than not having any other thoughts than Scarlet singing the “I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts” song.
Hopefully Vreni won’t stab Scarlet with the screwdriver before the wedding.

  4. So they’re not different species? They can have children?

    1. Yes, all 3 sentient races can interbreed. That’s explained in the “Setting” page, “Relationships” section. Also, we’ve seen interracial families already: human brother and fox sister in “The Machine of Eternal Summer 017”; human husband and fox wife in “The Machine of Eternal Summer 013”, and in “A Sky Full of Stars 103” they have a human child.

      1. Oooh! I never looked there, thanks for pointing my eyes
        ………
boo, no indications of gay coupling occurrence relative to the others
also shucks, no details on the genetics. I know that’s somewhat frivolous and inconsequential to the story, but as a science B.D., I get curious about elements like that when humanoid “cross-breeding” is a thing. especially when offspring is viable as it indicates that they should all be the same species despite the wildly variable phenotype~

  5. Scarlet’s being a brat here, but an absolutely realistic one. I like how this group accurately reflects different stages of adolescence.

  6. That fourth panel is the funniest thing I have seen here in all these weeks;; congrats, Elli! Speaking of which, by chance, have you named your daughter Scarlet?

    1. No, Elli and her husband named her Robyn Anne.

      1. That’s a beautiful name.

  7. General remark: the drawings of Scarlet’s expressions are an absolute treasure trove for self-expression during turbulent periods. Very commendable work, Novil and Elli.

  8. Never get into a heated debate with someone who’s holding a sharp object.
