A simple cogwheel would be easy, design-wise. Dragon version sold separately, or waiting for the next “funding drive.” They can’t even heat their homes. How are they going to melt and pour some found iron?
Wait, in panel 3, has Baako read the story, or heard Scarlet’s retelling? Scarlet’s mother had a book, (page 1 and 2!) so it had to have been printed somewhere, after all. Has Scarlet re-written a version of the Machine story or has the team found some copies?
Scarlet hung on to the book for the whole flight from Milk sequence and Tibor read it to her in the beginning of the chapter. Also during an early speech someone recognized the story so more copies exist.
As for working metal one of the jobs Scarlet did to raise money seemed to be in some kind of metal workshop.
They obviously use wood for heating their homes and for heat in their industry. There is plenty of forest, and the population density is certainly not high. So there is plenty of wood, they don’t need coal or any other energy source. Energy crystals are used for lighting, weapons and maybe something else.
As we can see in many tables: they produce glass, bake bricks, have various metal items, mines, printing presses, produce paper, produce clothes perhaps by processing wood pulp (viscose, etc.)… We see chimneys on houses, in one picture there was an iron stove in the room with a pipe leading into the chimney, a typical wood stove.
Well, now I’m curious if Novil drew on my idea (Eternal Summer Alliance) or if we just thought along the same lines. And congratulations to everyone involved (Novil, Elli, and Baako) for a brilliant logo.
Yes, I thought that “Summer” from your suggestion would be a good name part, and I didn’t find anything that fit better than “Alliance” together with it.
How fun! Thanks for taking that idea. I also think you’re right that Summer Alliance (and Sommerallianz) are better without the Eternal/Ewige, in being especially short and punchy.
Given the madness that has broken loose in this real-world country, please don’t use the initials, and Novil, might I suggest that you change to a different name that does not use them?

The society clearly burns wood and works metal. Such activities have shown up over and over in the story. Stop looking for things to nitpick.

Well, you don’t even need to pour the metal. Just find some old (or new) tiny actual cogwheels and attach a pin.

Do “pirate” coggers still get arrested by Officer Cyril? They probably don’t get the (math filled) newsletter. It’s probably in code anyway.
