Graybold is eating some kind of chips. Something like what Vreni baked for Scarlet, panels #009-010. Probably a rare delicacy, as it takes time to prepare and the spices are probably expensive. Oh yeah, Grondar might want the secret recipe for it! 😎
The “Carolus case”? They’re calling it “rallies” now? Does anyone else remember what happened to Viviana after her diary podcast speech to the town square masses?
Mr Greybold looks kinda like Machiavelli. If all of Lavarel will laugh at the country of Kirkiok, I don’t think Greybold will be one of the House of Lords dancing in a rockettes dress.
Are they a monarchy or some kind of republic? In a liberal republic I could see that such riots might be an issue, but in a dictatorship, Scarlet would either be used for the advantage of the tyrants or she might “vanish” on the way to Grondar & Grondar would be accused of killing her.
We have very little information about the political regime and political life in Kirelia. Scarlet mentions the King in #040. We don’t know if there are elections and political parties. As they were never mentioned, probably not.
No indication of dictatorship. There is freedom of the press. The police force is weak – indeed, we might think that there are only two policemen in Kirkiok (Cyril Gelning and Severin) plus their chief Rodar (see #026). Scarlet’s objection “you have no right to put me in preventive detention!” is taken seriously. The policemen are not violent, they are usually kind, good-looking, slim young men. Cyril did not arrest Scarlet for carrying a weapon or confiscate her leaflets, although he probably could have, he even helped her. (#038-040) When Scarlet and Tibor were begging in Samaris (SFOS #026), a policeman gave them some money.
Kirelia would be said to be a monarchy with a liberal, though perhaps not democratic, regime. Something that John Locke would support as the best form of government.
Also, in SFOS #043, we see a chamber where the King meets with the ministers. And in the newspaper in MG #043, the king appoints a new minister. No parliament is mentioned in either place.
Has the publication schedule changed? I haven’t seen any notices from Novil. Not complaining, I can easily imagine (for example) that new parenthood could be affecting the timeline, I’m just curious as the last few pages haven’t been on the usual schedule.
It is interesting to note that the Arcadian Empire did not fall only because of the war with the Ilian Republic, but “collapsed because a police officer shot a nine-year-old boy”. There were apparently internal rebellions and the overthrow of the central government. In our recent history, indeed, there have been such rebellions triggered by a relatively marginal event (Iran f.e.), although they rarely actually lead to the overthrow of the regime.

The commentor saying something among the lines of ‘Gondor will not get my grandmothers secret pie recipe!’ might have been right all along xD

Ludis Graybold seems like the kind of character who will keep popping up in the future.
