  1. Oh! Red stream and blue stream speech bubbles!

    (Or squares, I guess.)

    1. >>>> Oh! Red stream and blue stream speech bubbles!

I was always annoyed when that was brought up in Gaia in the most unsuitable situations, and now I can’t even escape these comments in Scarlet… *sigh*

      1. Being unpredictable has its disadvantages.

      2. Don’t worry, if you make them yellow people will assume the yellow stream is now a thing.
Just do your thing and let people think whatever they want. 🙂

  2. “not with *them* standing around!)?

  3. I love the way you did that reveal

    1. I’m not exactly sure what you mean.

  4. BlackDragonSlayer

    THOSE DIALOGUE BOXES 😮
I also love the confirmation that Scarlet wasn’t just imagining things back then (or now). Plus, it builds mystery on who those voices are. Actual physical entities, or spirits/otherworldly entities?

    1. >>>> spirits

The dialog sounds too prosaic for something completely ethereal/esoteric.

      1. I don’t see why. If there were guardians of a spirit world this is the sort of dialogue they might have if a former visitor returned.

        1. I’d expect something more esoteric from a ghost than a plain “Aren’t you going to let Scarlet in?” At least from its first line of dialog.

    2. Red is Novil and blue is Elli, obviously.

      1. You’ve figured it out!

  5. you know… there are distinct red and blue blurs when the portal is first opened on The Machine of Eternal Summer 022

    1. >>>> there are distinct red and blue blurs when the portal is first opened on The Machine of Eternal Summer 022

The “red blur” is actually the light from the oval light bulbs in the cave.

  6. Her favourite book, that mentions The Machine, is titled “Princess Elodie and the Silver Dragon”. There were dragons in Gaia, too. Maybe they communicate it colourful squares.

    1. Or maybe the next page will already reveal more about the mysterious speakers.

  7. El Príncipe Austral

    Ohh, hello Gaia and Bhaal!

  8. She needs the dolls to get in like she had the first time.

    1. Some readers have commented on that. But it’s not an idea I had while writing the story. So, no, the Elodie doll is not needed and won’t be addressed at any time in the comic.

      1. Thank you very much for not doing that. It would have been too absurd and arbitrary for its predictability in my eyes.

  9. Blue: Aren’t you going to let Scarlet in?
Red: No. She hasn’t suffered enough yet. Losing her parents? Her boyfriend? Those were just the beginning! Now she’ll walk away thinking her entire life’s purpose was in vain! She’ll believe she’s a failure! A loser!
    Blue: But–
Red: And what’s more, all of her loyal “Machinehead” followers will abandon her! They’ll call her a liar! A fraud! She’ll be shunned and ridiculed wherever she goes! Finally, my revenge will be complete!!! MUHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!
Blue: …Dude, what did that poor kid ever do to you?
Red: …The week before the Grondan invasion, we bumped into each other on the road. And she called me a name. A horrible, hateful name. I still have nightmares about it to this day.
Blue: She was six years old, you psycho!
Red: Nobody calls me a “dumb doo-doo head” and gets away with it! NOBODY!!!

    1. Not exactly how the dialog in the next page will go.

  10. Oh, that’s fantastically done. Such a great surprise and perfectly timed.

  11. Ha! This hidden dialogue on the right is the first hint of true fantasy in the comic! Until now, everything could be interpreted in the SF narrative: humanoid wolves and foxes are the product of genetic engineering, energy crystals are the product of high technology and not magic, Lavarel was inhabited by humans 50,000 years ago, the machine that controls the climate is not magic but high technology — and all that old knowledge is now forgotten.

    1. Scarlet said in https://www.sandraandwoo.com/scarlet/comic/a-sky-full-of-stars-063/ that Lavarel “holds deep, dark secrets”. Maybe even things that can’t be explained conventionally.

    2. What makes you think those dialog boxes can’t be AIs?

      1. Yes, that could definitely be the dialog between two robots or other types of AI.

  12. Oh ho ho! So there *is* something to this wall after all! Who are those voices? The square speech bubbles suggest they are automatons? Perhaps some sort of security device that only lets certain people in? Given that Scarlet was let in the first time, I’m guessing the presence of the other people is the reason, or at least one of the reasons, for not letting her in.

    1. >>>> The square speech bubbles suggest they are automatons?

But all word bubbles are rectangular… They have no tails since there’s nobody present where the tails could point to. The double borders are special, of course, but done primarily to make the boxes look good.

That doesn’t mean the speakers could not well be robots, of course.

      >>>> Perhaps some sort of security device that only lets certain people in?

Given that both speakers are apparently capable to form coherent sentences, it would need to be some kind of AI, not just a “device”.

  13. Blue and red could be merely a male and female voice, or some like that, for instance, a meek and an autoritarian, or simply two different characters. But there is some objective links with Gaia details, whoever are talking, they are seeing what is happening in real time, so possibly can see in a Eldor-like way (never explained the trick, doesn’t matter anyway), also, one of them is not understanding what is happening. Anyway, my guess is the “No” answer is the first appearance of the White Witch, who clearly has a plan and has not shared it with the one talking with her (nor is going to do).

A more speculative idea, I hope princess Elodie is not the White Witch.

    1. >>>> A more speculative idea, I hope princess Elodie is not the White Witch.

This comic has a tendency of crushing hopes.

  14. I think this is the first page that motivated me to go look at the comments. Now that I see how responsive the creators are, I might have to go back through the archives and read ALL the comment pages.

But since this is my first comment (unless I’m getting forgetful in my old age) I should say that I’m really enjoying this story. I am looking forward to seeing what the creators have in mind. Thank you for the hard work.

  15. Many of the comments on this and past pages make guesses or *think* they know how the story will go. I don’t and don’t with other webcomics I read. It’s YOUR story, Novil, and I’m more than happy to get wrapped up in how you envision it to be. I’ve thanked you before – and I’ll be thankful and delighted each time a new page comes up or as I re-read it as I’ve done a number of times. You weave a remarkable story!

    1. With the speed the comics is being published – and I mean ANY webcomic – people making guesses is inevitable.

  16. So it’s nothing ‘special’ you have to say or do (except the button press) to get in, some ‘entity’ or ‘entities’ have to allow it. This makes me wonder why they let Scarlet enter when she was a six-year-old child… a VERY stupid move, because a child can’t do anything, and the future is unpredicted (otherwise the question “Won’t you let Scarlet in?” would make no sense.

Or do they just not want witnesses? Also a bad move, because when Scarlet leaves now without being able to show any sort of ‘success’, that will be the LAST chance for whatever.

    1. >>>> So it’s nothing ‘special’ you have to say or do (except the button press) to get in, some ‘entity’ or ‘entities’ have to allow it.

It looks like that. But Scarlet didn’t do anything special back in the day either. She just pushed the button and then slide door opened.

      >>>> This makes me wonder why they let Scarlet enter when she was a six-year-old child…

There are two possibilities, but you only consider the first one: They deliberately let Scarlet enter. But there’s also a second possibility: The let her enter involuntarily for some reason.

      >>>> and the future is unpredicted (otherwise the question “Won’t you let Scarlet in?” would make no sense.

The future is also unpredictable for us, although the universe may actually be (super)deterministic.

      >>>> Or do they just not want witnesses?

One may assume that entities controlling a portal mechanism like this would also have the ability to let only enter one person if they wish so.

  17. … also, halfway through the whole story, with time wasted so far for nothing but Scarlet studying and suffering some tragic incidences, (that leave her for nothing/nobody to fight for except the ‘general well-being’) to NOW introduce a still-active old civilization monitoring a hidden gateway sounds … pretty silly.

    1. Letting Scarlet enter ‘involuntarily’ makes no sense (to me), because entities who control a special gateway must be able to see who knocks on the door, and a child is a child, and not a ‘chosen being of whatever’. Their dialogue also implies that they ‘know’ Scarlet, so they must be ‘more’ than just getekeepers.

The sentence “Won’t you let Scarlet in?” confirms that at least entity #1 does not know the future, otherwise that question makes no sense.

‘No witnesses’ means that they might not want to reveal the machine to people other than Scarlet (besides, there was a whole ‘city’ hidden there, not just a machine, if I remember right). And I doubt they are able to let Scarlet pass alone without anybody noticing. Even if they teleported her away right on the spot, the others would question where she went, and tear the whole place down bit by bit.

But whatever theories, now get to the chase already. That story has stalled long enough.

      1. >>>> Letting Scarlet enter ‘involuntarily’ makes no sense (to me), because entities who control a special gateway must be able to see who knocks on the door

They may not have been present back then. In fact, Scarlet didn’t see anyone in the pathway or the cave’s central room. Of course they could have been hidden from view or be inside the Machine.

        1. That, again, sounds unreasonable. If they are ‘persons’, they could activate the machine themselves and save the planet (unless they are malevolent), so I assume ‘entities’, as in, something that is only there to guard the doorway, unaffected by time.

Assuming they have not been present ‘back then’… means assuming that they just happened to come by in-between and started guarding the gateway. Which makes no sense. You don’t start guarding a decades-long unused gateway in-between. Either it’s ungarded, or guarded, or someone came and is trying to activate the machine. So if the latter, Scarlet can just lay back and wait. I doubt she would be of much help anyway, because no matter how much you know about history, or math, or weapons tech, handling a specific machine needs knowledge about _the machine_.

And now, please post the next page already, or do you revel in people speculating wrongly?

        2. >>>>And now, please post the next page already, or do you revel in people speculating wrongly?
@Dah Take it easy. The artist gave birth to a baby recently and that makes it hard for her and Novil to stick to a schedule of 2 pages per week. The page will be posted when it’s ready.
          >>>>That, again, sounds unreasonable.
We know very little about this world, its factions and their interests. For all we know there is a hidden faction of people who would not benefit from the machine being turned on. At this point anything is possible and nothing is “unreasonable” or “nonsensical”. I think the next pages will give us a better idea of what’s going on, so sit back, relax and more importantly: drop the hostile attitude.

        3. I’m not hostile, just tired of waiting, and nothing happening. Instead we are only presented with stuff going wrong, Scarlet loosing friends… is this “Game of Thrones”? IMO at least SOME times something ‘positive’ should happen, something that feels like a ‘success’ to Scarlet…

IMO you are interpreting too much into this. It’s just a doorway. A very sophisticated one, maybe, and with tech that is most likely beyone what is currently standard on Lavarel, but suddenly assuming a ‘hidden faction’ is behind this most likely isn’t true. The planet is DYING. Who would be AGAINST turning on the machine?

        4. Dah, are you serious? “IMO at least SOME times something ‘positive’ should happen, something that feels like a ‘success’ to Scarlet…”

Did you somehow skip over the part where, out of almost literally nothing, she (a) built a movement of people who believe her and (b) convinced an entire government to back her attempt to find out more about her claims?

And if you’re not happy with the pace of the comic, you can always apply for a refund. Good grief. I’m sure Novil wouldn’t miss the minority of impatient whiners in these comment sections.

        5. The comic is free, but IMO the pacing has been horrible. And either you ‘value’ a fanbase, or not…

Actually, I do not really see Scarlet building a ‘fanbase’ as a ‘win’… sure, she got recognition, but all that is void if she can’t get the door open, so…

        6. I think the pacing has been excellent. If anything, I’d say a slower buildup might’ve been even better. But in the end, it’s all personal preference. We’re here to enjoy Novil’s story and only he knows what’s going to happen. You can keep saying “IMO” but you’re still coming off hostile and entitled. Not a good look.

@Novil Thank you for all that you do. Hope you’re enjoying working on this new comic! 🙂

        7. “Actually, I do not really see Scarlet building a ‘fanbase’ as a ‘win’”

Well, now you’re just moving the goalposts. You initially said “IMO at least SOME times something ‘positive’ should happen”, and I pointed out that the development of Scarlet’s movement is a clearly significant “something positive”, at which point you switched to claiming that only a “win” matters. By your definition, the “win” could only happen at the end of the comic.

Besides, we’ve literally had one page of “can’t get the door open” and you’re already over-reacting as if the comic is over.

        8. >>>> Assuming they have not been present ‘back then’… means assuming that they just happened to come by in-between and started guarding the gateway. Which makes no sense. You don’t start guarding a decades-long unused gateway in-between.

Consider this: The portal was unguarded and unlocked, just needed to stone to be pushed. Scarlet comes along and does just that, and finds the Machine, then leaves.
Red and Blue (or their predecessors/superiors notice evidence of the intrusion and, horrified by the security breach, decide to guard the portal.
Scarlet comes back, and the current scene unfolds.

        9. @Dys >>> I think the pacing has been excellent.
Personally, I think 1 page every other week is questionable, especially if it’s a long, continuous story and not the usual ‘web comic’.

@ME >>> I pointed out that the development of Scarlet’s movement is a clearly significant “something positive”

Scarlet developing a “movement” is not a “win”, it’s just means to her intented goal. And if she fails NOW, if she cannot provide anything worthwhile, then that movement is DEAD. That’s why I said she needs a ‘win’. Or what is she gonna say to her movement when she returns? “Well, got there, couldn’t open the door, but I assure you, there IS a machine…” at which point they would probably throw fruit at her, if food wasn’t this rare.

@Old Brit >>> Red and Blue notice evidence of the intrusion and, horrified by the security breach, decide to guard the portal.

If it’s important who enters, then it would be far easier to just lock it and do a ‘face check’ as we saw. Obviously, it’s not just a door, but a special ‘portal’ that opens a gateway, otherwise there would not have been soil on the other side when broken through forcefully…

  18. Uh-oh… they actually know her NAME? Blue and Red stalkers?

  19. Darn mysterious colored text boxes and their willingness to sacrifice all of humanity and foxkind to starvation just so they can maintain a dramatic air.

    1. Yup, definitely looks this way. Scarlet doesn’t have any other lead ; if she leaves without anything, it would be quite unsatisfying end for the comics, but not exactly surprise: she already lost her love interest, assuming this will end well is optimistic.

  20. A very VERY stupid assumption might be that back then, Scarlet put a glass bottle on the table, the light fell on it, and/or somehow hit Scarlet and/or the passageway, and the entities assumed it was the light from an ancient glass disk (whatever that was called). But if they can make their own decisions anyway, why go such length. Just knock and let them decide if they like your face or not…

    1. but …

      they currently evidently don’t (?)

  21. My hypothesis is that these “guardians” got distracted by Grondar’s tunneling for the invasion.
