We have a pretty good idea of how much 6 shards are worth, because we know Scarlet’s dad spent 7 shards on the cart rental. Renting a cart for a day costs a nontrivial amount of money — this isn’t a fortune, but it’s more than you’d spend on snacks or small toys.

Nah. Remember that if he slipped without anyone around, he would technically still die but it would be VERY long dying. What he needs is a way to suicide which is more reliable. Saaaay, what about going after that family he caused so trouble to, attack that girl who was so violent in their first encounter and “accidentally” drop a gun so she can shot him. That can’t backfire! What’s the worst which can happen, actually dropping the gun by accident instead of by “accident”?
(Yes, we know it will backfire, as he’s listed as main hero. But it’s most sound than his other plans.)
