The Machine of Eternal Summer 023

  • Scarlet: We’ll have to take a look at this, Elodie! Maybe there really is a treasure! Then mom and dad won’t have to worry anymore!
  • Scarlet: Wow, that’s a long passageway! I wonder who built it…
  • Scarlet: That’s weird, Elodie. Our cellar is only two meters underground. How can the ceiling of this cave be so high?
  • Scarlet: This is getting scary.
  • Scarlet: But I’m a brave girl! Just like you, Elodie!

  1. …. ok, maybe it IS ancient. I mean, powered door and powered light is one thing, but if it’s also build in non-euclidean space, then it easily can have repair nanites as well.

Also, the option of the door opening because she matched fingerprint scans or something.

Suddenly the option of machine of eternal summer being there already doesn’t seem so weird. I mean, the rest of comics may be about making it work, right?

    1. I don’t think “non-euclidean” means what you think it does.

Also, the ceiling can be this high because the path has a slight but persistent decline

      1. I don’t think it’s something as simple as a sloped floor. If it was that, I would expect her to be more uncertain about the observation. Also, even if she’s off by a foot (or a third of a meter or whatever), there’s a limit because the hollow ground would be apparent at the surface. More likely something stranger is going on (like a portal).

      2. Are you talking about the fact that some people consider only elliptic geometry and hyperbolic geometry to be non-euclidean, as opposed to any geometry which is not euclidean? You think that when Lovercraft described the sunken city of R’lyeh as having non-euclidean geometry it was one of those two?

Any irregular geometry is necessarily non-euclidean. Any portal necessarily involves irregular geometry, although it’s not the only thing doing that.

  2. The character, a doll-carrying child, being able to spot what strange thing is going on is the sort of thing that makes her worthy to be a main character.
Just walking in on the Eternal Summer Machine would be too easy. A workshop? A secret laboratory? A room with a string-conspiracy wall? Scarlet bringing Elodie makes me wonder if she’d be useful in Idol-swapping, Indiana Jones style.

    1. I love the idea of the doll being used in Idol-swapping, but I’m sure Scarlet would never do that. No gloden Idol is worth Elodie! 🙂

  3. That’s one big cesspit

  4. She does notice things like the ceiling being higher than it should be. The most likely explanation is that the path goes slightly downward, but it’s still a good observation considering that she seems very young. There’s also the chance that the roof got too high too quickly for that explanation. I wonder if she’s brave or reckless though. Probably both.

    1. By the way, how old is she?
She looks like 7 or 8 years old. Old enough to realize that something is “wrong” in the ceiling. Kids are smart. They just don’t have a lot of knowledge: she can’t imagine portal situations or realize how *wrong* this could be.

      1. I would expect a child at her age to notice if the cellar is twice as high as it should be, but not if it’s 110% as high. Compared to last panel previous page, the roof does not look that much higher before Scarlet makes the observation, while it looks way higher at second to last panel. It’s hard to tell what’s going on because we don’t know if the floor is just sloping downwards slightly or if something seemingly impossible is going on.

  5. I very much like how what would be panel four actually is the background of the whole page 🙂 I suppose this will look particularly good in a possibly planned printrd paper edition. Plus, gorgeous colors, not just on this page!

  6. Oh, and how could the red plush dragon have possibly known this?
Might Mr. Dragon even have witnessed someone going through, stuffed in his storage box??
