  1. Gotta wonder about that human soldier, he sees a fox running towards him with a little girl and thinks it’s an attack? Thank goodness the fox soldier stopped him from shooting.

    1. I don’t think he’s racist or anything – more like scarred or trigger-happy.

    2. How quickly we forget:

Incidentally, is there a guide to how to put URLs, quotes, italics, etc., in the text? I’m well acquainted with how to do that in several other discussion pages for webcomics, but the syntax appears different here.

    3. He saw two figures running toward him. A nervous soldier awaiting the attack could quite easily imagine them being enemy troops and open fire. Combination of adrenaline and fear could do tricks with perception.

    4. Looks like a wolf rather than fox.

    5. There are cultures that will and have used their own children in attacks, frequently suicide attacks, knowing the enemy soldiers will not expect it or will hesitant to fire and if they do open fire, it can cause a lot of psychological damage.

  2. BlackDragonSlayer

Ooooh. I reckon they’re about to get caught in the middle of a firefight.

    1. In the middle of a firefight is certainly less than ideal, but it is better than being on the receiving end of a one-way exchange.

  3. Hm. Interesting to note – both sides of conflict use the same uniform, with just color stripes to distinguish each other. This could indicate two possible scenarios:
A – it’s a civil war, and both sides use uniform and weaponry of the same pattern
B – it’s a conflict between “third world” nations, who are forced to rely on foreign suppliers – maybe even on the same one – to get their uniforms and weaponry.

    1. Grondan soldiers: olive uniform, red markings
Kirelian soldiers: dark green uniform, blue piping
Not exactly same uniforms, but similar cut and helmets.

  4. Must point out, that defenders of the base obviously weren’t expecting the attack for long. They didn’t bother to clean the killing ground in front of them. Enemy troops could use trees and bushes to conceal their position, pinning defenders down in trenches. Lack of razor wire, internal communication trenches and bunkers (capable of surviving the artillery fire) also indicates that defense was prepared in great haste, and defenders basically have no time to do anything more than a simple trench.

    1. In the previous strip, Tibor said following; “We’ll try to make our way to Kirkiok. Kirelia’s army has a large base there.”
This does not look like a large army base, but even so, Tibor seems to have known this base would be there. Further, this comic takes place in a world that is getting colder and colder, food is getting harder to come by and depleting resources is a well known cause for war. Kirelia (and everyone else) absolutely should be prepared for war to break out any day.
I do however agree with your analysis, what you said is what it looks like if we just look at the base.

  5. If this was Warhammer 40,000 they’d have been shot and the story would be over.
Also, the Kriegsmen laugh at those trenches.

    1. If it was Perry Rhodan, everyone would laugh at Kriegsmen’s trenches)
For the record, I agree, that defense looks rather crude. Apparently, this isn’t a frontline base, and they just got warning about enemy raid. So they have no time/ manpower to do anything more than to dig a simple trench around and hope for the best.

  6. Don’t get the book wet, she’ll clearly need it later.
It’s not Tibor’s fault that he’s charging an army base. He has to get there somehow. As for finding out the border of an army base, caltrops are more useful for rivers than land mines. Hopefully, there’s none there, Scarlet has enough problems.

    1. Doesn’t look like the base is well-prepared for defense. They didn’t even clean away the bushes on the other side of the river. No bunkers to cover in case attackers bring mortars or artillery, no communication trenches going behind. It looks like they got only a very short warning about the attack, and only managed to prepare the simple trench.

    2. Besides needing it for later it’s also her only possession other than her clothing and was her absolute favorite thing before all this started. Gotta keep that safe, she’s going to need it to help her get through losing her parents and home.

  7. At this point, we can conclude that it’s a full scale invasion and not just a skirmish or a rogue group from the neighboring country. Maybe the cold has hit Grondar harder than Kirelia.
