[0018] Cloud

The current story arc started with this strip: A Trip to the Forest.
- Woo: Guess what, I met two new friends in the forest, Shadow the fox and Sid the squirrel.
- Sandra: Sweet! Let’s hope you’ll get along with them as well as I do with my best friends Larisa and Cloud.
- Woo: Cloud? Isn’t that a rather strange name?
- Sandra: Yes, it is. Cloud’s parents were obsessed with the video game Final Fantasy VII at that time. Cloud was the name of the hero of the story.
- Woo: Ha ha. They surely regret calling him like that now.
- Sandra: I don’t really think so…
- David: Get ready for your sword training, Cloud! Mr. Masaru is already waiting!
Oh Cloud, you androgynous little punk. What would the fangirls(boys?!?!) do without you.
Ok… I just have to say this…
Sandra looks a LOT like Roll (from the Mega Man series of video games), it’s kinda frightening… (I’m sure this has actually already been said somewhere before, but I haven’t visited the forums… yet)
Anyway, I’m Lovin’ the Comic so far, keep it up 🙂
Wow, both of Sandra’s friends have FF VII names. Funny how there’s a hero and a boss in the matter. I wonder if their personalities are the same. Does Sandra have a rival? Can’t wait to see more of this comic. Keep up the great work!
“Sandra looks a LOT like Roll (from the Mega Man series of video games), […]”
I had to google “roll mega man” because I had no idea who this person is. But you are right, Sandra and Roll are looking similar.
“Wow, both of Sandra’s friends have FF VII names.”
Oh my, I totally forgot about Elena from the Turks. I will probably change her name because that was not intentional at all.
I’d forgotten how long ago FFVII was… seems like only yesterday.
Well, out the names from FFVII, they could’ve chosen worse. Imagine if he was named Rufus. Poor ol’ Rufus the Doofus…
…I actually think that someone out there really tried to name their son/daughter after FFVII. I just hope they never managed. :XD I rofl’ed at the last panel! I just hope he likes sword training. :XD
“I will probably change her name”
I see you did … I rather liked it as it was, pointing out Cloud as an odd name but making no mention of Elena because it’s common enough. Ah, well. No real damage done.
lol….and another of sandra’s friend will be skywalker…
[…] one of Sandra’s schoolmates, was first mentioned in this strip, but not actually shown. So, now you know what he is looking like. Cloud is one of the main […]
[…] you are a new reader you should have a look at the strips Cloud and Major mistake in which Sandra’s friend Cloud Williams was […]
Actually, I remember hearing from someone who attended an anime convention who was talking to a couple with the last name of Valentine. Along with them was their first-born son, Vincent
I can’t honestly say I’ve never thought about naming my kids after video game characters…
Hahaha, awesome.
Cloud, eh? I’ve met quite a few people named after fictional characters. For example, a while back, I met a woman named Arwin working at a Home Depot. And I have a cousin is named after Wolverine. (Well, Logan, not “Wolverine”, although that would be funny)
This Masaru guy is fake.
Japanese do not wear footwear inside the house.
haha 🙂
Aww, thats cute, one of my friends is named Cloud. He’s tall, and blonde, and everything.
cloud…i think it could be worst if he’s name was squall, and he’s late for gunblade training o.o
I have never played FF VII, but I know the game fairly well and I am a fan of some of the other FF. I had made a character before I had known about FF VII in which I name Cloud. A lot people asumed that the character was inspire by Cloud from Final Fantsy because of how popular he is. Though my character was inspired by a character name Cloud he was from a movie and comic named The Storm Riders.
Amazing this is just like Calven and Hobbes…but for use! I COMPLETELY LOVE THIS!! <3
I was just about to give up on this, but I’ll admit that was funny. Kind of reminds me of a joke a comedian once told ‘I know for a fact that it works pretty well to let your kids pick their own names when they are old enough. I knew two such kids myself. And let me tell you, Chewbacca and Skeletor were the coolest kids in school.’
Anyone else notice that Clouds Father looks remarkable similar to Tetsuya Nomura?
I love the comic, but as a native english speaker I’d say “Mr. Masaru is waiting,” instead of “Mr. Masaru is already waiting.” Just nitpicking, really, but occasionally the wording doesn’t feel natural. It’s grammatically correct, just an odd way of saying it, because “already” implies that somthing happened sooner-than-usual, while “waiting” implies that the subject has been around longer-than-usual.
Sorry, grammer nerd here. If it helps, I see similar slip-ups in other German-to-English webcomics, like Erzengel.
I am just so utterly disturbed that there could be teenagers at this moment running around named after Cloud.
Hey there is nothing wrong with the name Cloud. Especially if your parents get you the training to knock the crap out of people who think otherwise. xP
You will never be as cool as Cloud 😀
I JUST FINISHED THAT GAMEEEEEE LAST NIGHTTTTTTTTT.
@ no space:
Be very sad. That’s what, I’m still obsessed about the game, and it’s been over 10 years!
They just don’t make em like they used to…
@ darktail:
To be fair, my brother’s girlfriend’s brother named her child Trinity after something in the Matrix and my brother is pushing for Auron for their child if it is a boy…but she is fighting tooth and nail for Ezio :I
Oh wow. I read the name Cloud and it made me think of the poor little kid I know who’s dad named him cloud. And to make it worse, the kids last name is the name of an animal.
@ Odos:
Well Woo looks a bit like Rocket Raccon
Woah this weblog is fantastic i love studying your articles. Stay up the good work! You realize, a lot of persons are looking round for this info, you could help them greatly.
Today’s lesson: Climhazzard 101. This is gonna be a fun Tuesday.
OMG 5 OF THE COMICS IVE READ TODAY HAVE FF REFERENCES LAST ONE WAS ABOUT WHEN CLOUD THREW SEPHIROTH INTO THE WALL IN FF7CC
Is Clouds’ Dads’ Shirt Fairy Tail?? Because it looks like it is
I know a lot of people named after fictional characters.
While naming them after gaming characters is new, since video games are new, in a few years nobody will still think it odd.
@ Kar:
Fairy what? anyway in this case I’d try googling Final Fantasy VII first before reaching other conclusions.
Kar wrote:
Sorry, Fairy tail did not exist yet
Though it would be really cool
@ Drake:
Yeah, but Rufus is typically a dog’s name, and I doubt parents want there kids to have a common dog’s name.
@ Penpencilandbrush:
I know no dogs named Rufus – only a naked mole rat…
I’ve seen worse names for the hero of a game. Even from within the Final Fantasy series.
It seems strange in a country with a low percentage of given names that are also regular words in the official language, true.
