Ahh, maybe you misunderstood. This was never fully a “children’s” publication, it’s been PG from almost forever. Also, although ostensibly set in the USA, it’s written and drawn by two people who are both from countries with a somewhat more liberal, or might we say, mature attitude towards these things.
Just be thankful it’s not Japanese O_O
Cloud can beat up bullies twice his size, but stands no chance against puberty.
@ Inverse:
Or ever going to the beach, or a public baths. A point I was going to make to another poster but may as well put here is that you’ll see at least this much there, if not far worse.
At least he’s done the sensible thing and moved up from kiddie speedos to more manly bermuda shorts. Now he just has to learn the final lesson that you pick a size too big and do the drawstring up extra tight to compensate, rather than risk things getting a little too snug (and with the water, too revealing) down there.
It takes a special kind of person to appreciate a teen or grown man wearing budgie smugglers…

Oh, you just KNOW she’s going to notice and sidle up next to him with a trollface grin in the next strip…
The question is where will it go from there? I vote it becomes a case of bonerkill, Cloud is relieved, but Larisa is enraged that “he” responded that way.

I bet we will, and it will be handled quite sensitively, but at the same time at least semi realistically and humorously. The kids seem to be ageing in real time, wasn’t Sandy about 8 or 9 when this started?
And remember all the furore over Larisa’s insulin use etc?

Oh, grow a sense of humour and escape whatever puritan homeschooled ghetto your mind’s in. This sort of thing – at least at this only kind-of-suggestive level – is a fairly common comedy subject, even in english-speaking countries.
I did have a bit of a start and think “huh, well, we certainly know the writer is german (/european? :)) now…”, but it’s only at the cultural-dissonance level more than moral outrage (a bit like watching Sat Eins or RTL for its novelty value back in the early days of UK cable TV where we got all that stuff FoC, and finding that softcore comedy-porn – sort of at the level of the most explicit bits of the Carry-On films, but more sustained – followed the 6 o’clock news…). I’ll only be properly worried if the trunks and maxi-bikini start to come off.
Aside: Won’t be entirely surprised if there’s some weird dreamsequence bit where it’s cloud’s chest that fills out rather than sandra’s, though. Without him putting a top on.

Four words: Funny Because It’s True. 🙂
Regarding the comment on “not young lust I hope”, I’m afraid the two words go together. The young are lustful. What’s more important is how they handle it (and in the case of boys at least, “handling it” is actually the preferred solution). 😉
@Phil
Unfortunately, this comic has long been established as not being one of those “steady state Universe” comics where the characters never change. The characters in this comic are growing up and so they will go through those teenage years, whether we like it or not. On the good side, it means better character development. The down side is that the comic will probably have to end, some day.
@somebody
I think most of the people reading this comic are “regular people” and they don’t find it inappropriate. I believe that the fact that you find it inappropriate says a lot more about you than it does about the comic or about the other readers.
@Avian Mosquito
It may be appropriate to mention that I also had that “problem” long before I reached the age of 12 and discovered how to “take care of it” several years before that age.
My opinion (for what it’s worth) is that this comic is treating a realistic problem of growing up in a realistic but amusing way which stays within the boundaries of good taste.
@ Melkior:
Oh, mine was worse. It wasn’t random, it was triggered by a girl. And not all the time, only when there was no way in the nine hells she could fail to notice it. Namely, I’d always curl up with her at nap time, which the adults let slide because it was adorable, and then it would happen. And I’d turn beet red, and she’d just smile and pull closer. Drove me crazy and I always knew it would happen, but there I was every day.
Ah, yes…The Curse.
Is there a man who doesn’t remember That Time When…
@ Rock: In tight swim trunks no less
Hand: Why not?
haha if you start a growing up series show how annoying the periods are and that boners are nothing compared to one week tortue
@ RJF:
Jogging when that is happening is just asking for an accident. ^^;
Rushing off for a cold shower when you were just sitting at a lakeside would feel suspicious.
A liedown in a dark room just leaves the mind free to wander, which could lead to the problem not going away for even longer! 😀

Ha! My oh my, yes… That just makes it worse, doesn’t it. ^^; It feels horribly obvious to you, and it just may be…
Quick — run into the water! The shock of the cold water ought to take care of the “problem”!
@ Deko:
better yet sandras or larrisa hand lol
Heh, not too many strips back Sandra was sitting astride Cloud shouting Marry Me! I can’t believe this didn’t happen then – and she’d sure have noticed. Maybe she took it as a compliment – after all it’s just that. Cloud’s bigger problem now is all the others there seeing….
To whoever said the strip started off with the kids at the age of 8 or 9, I think they’ve always been 12, but they’re obviously maturing- albeit slowly.
I’ve often wondered just where the writer/artist want to take this strip. Do they want to let the kids mature fully and head towards legal age, or do they want the cast to stay as the eternal 12 year olds.
If the former then well and good, but the stated ages need to increase fairly rapidly now.
If the latter then this sort of thing isn’t really going to aid the believability.
@ Phil:
High fives on that one dude, I don’t want them to “Grow up” :[
Such is the disadvantage of swim trunks. Better get back in the water, Cloud.
I know that feel, boner.
Bro, i meant bro!
And don´t worry Cloud, you can relearn how to control that part of your body once you´ve fully grown up. Sometimes, not always. And it could still lead to akward situations. Like always.
oh lord XD
Cloud’s growing up~
Wow I miss a few days and this is what awaits me back… AWESOME! I almost blew a fuse when I saw this, but I must say I’m glad to FINALLY see a comic that doesn’t just hide in it’s lil safe spot and dares to mess with ppls heads sometimes. 🙂
-Snerk!-
I haven’t been able to stop laughing! I do feel sorry for Cloud, though.
And then Larisa comes up and says, “Ooh, Cloud, is that for me? You shouldn’t have!”
Really funny!! and yeah! we all have some similar experiences growing up. But i found amazing that Cloud’s private area can talk..THAT never happend to me anyways…
BRB wrote:
Well those who do not have those experiences should visit hospital 😀
But as for “talking” I would humbly sugest one improvement to author… I think “thought” bubble would be more apropriate than “talk” bubble
This is actually a notable change in the comic’s direction-path. Even with Larisa’s notable trend towards, eh, well, kissing boys… Cloud and Sandra have had a much more pure friendship-type romance.
I’m not disapproving, since I love to see character development, even when there’s unruly hormones involved. However, I must say it’s a step away from the comic’s normal tone.
All I can say now is…
Periscope Up
That never felt as a curse to me.
Gotta ask, who is the random foot in the first panel?
@ Blue Beetle:
problem is getting to the water without being noticed!
FINALLY! A full out sex joke!
Alhough I have to say… kinda a small bump there, huh? Eh. He’s only 12.
I love the fact that, even though Sandra’s it’s not a “pretty girl” as Larisa, or many other girls, Cloud (as a lot of man in this world) connects love with sexual atraction, so his feelings make him “want her” in a sexual way (not a bad way, just natural)

Clouud likes sandraa~ and to think, its just in his head… both of his heads. ;D greetings from twistedville
yeah..this is pretty awkward but there are some bushes behind him so he can hide there xD
@ Phil:
Well, the kids have to grow, sooner or later. Plus, the comic will probably not go all “hormone-crazed teens”. That’s not the spirit.
@ Schmuckey:
Aw, c’mon, man. They can’t stay children forever, you know.
“You tried to keep it a secret. But now the world’s gonna know.
You tried for perfection, but then oh. Uh oh. Erection.” The Faint reference. 😉
hmmm, for some of us males that is a lifetime issue…hecks sometimes is “schwing time” just because. I’m olde enough to have watched armstrong step on the moon and still that problem arises.
It’s true. It’s natural. It isn’t pornography. It is presented in a funny way. No one can argue with facts.
So in a strip that currently tells a story about ‘boner’, some people apparently can’t handle if another sex related comments were made, and thus the downvoter army suddenly appear out of nowhere.
What’s the matter ? You can handle a ‘boner’ story, but can’t handle my comment about ‘period’ ?
@ Inverse:Actually, I kind of agree with somebody. I mean, don’t get me wrong; I love this comic, and I’ll probably keep reading it for a very long time. However, I must admit that it’s more than a little jarring seeing a boner joke (complete with an actual boner) with characters who until very recently were depicted as kids. Now, I do recognize that the artist is trying to let them ‘grow up’ a little, as reflected in the recent material, and that’s something I think is a good idea. However, it’s possible to go a little too far, and something so blatantly, right-in-your-face sexual is definitely too far, especially for a kid-friendly comic.
In the interest of not sounding like a total douche, I must admit I laughed my ass off. It was really, incredibly funny. But I still believe that the kind of blatantly sexual humor we’ve just seen should not continue unless the artist is willing to put up a disclaimer stating the comic is not intended for kids. Funny or not, kids should not be seeing boners in their comics.
Note for Cloud:
Things to do when the BUMP hits:
1., Close your legs
2., lie face down
3., get into the cold water
4., think of something much much less appealing
Things NOT to do when the BUMP hits:
1., yell aloud so everyones attention turns toward you 😀
@ BRB:
It now occurs to me that the author comes from the same country as a movie with this premise: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093240/
