Well, it’s a terrible event. From a meta perspective, though, now we have some idea exactly why using a rainbow knife is so terrifying. We know that Vivi and her mentors were terrified of it, as seen way back in https://www.sandraandwoo.com/gaia/2023/08/15/shadowdancers-087/ . But now we see the result.
On the plus side, nice to see that Lili’s defensive spells are still active and effective.
Kind of makes me wonder if the way it is used affects the way it may fail. Cracking the safe was a delicate, deliberate operation where it looked like she was basically trying to pick a lock with it; whereas in this case it was a wild swing at an equally hard incoming sword. A lot more motion and different forces involved. (Not necessarily more force than the safe, just more more variety in forces involved). For the safe she was weilding it with one hand for dexterity, with her arm braced by her other arm for precision. Here, no such care or precision.
And I suspect the guards didn’t know what the dagger was, or chose to ignore it. I suspect rainbow knives are pretty rare, because if merely parrying a blade like this was enough to kill everyone in the room was well known, I would suspect they would treat her like someone with a live bomb, not just an armed enemy.

Few pages later it’s implied the rainbow knive is EXTREMELY rare – there is probably just one on whole Gaia as it’s one of only five on six weapons effective against Bhaal’s archdemons. And yes, it’s exact properties are probably not widely known.
And for a brief moment, Gaia turned into a horror comic 😛

@ Zitchas:
Apparently Viviana didn’t know the full risks involved. She thought she was just risking a hand.

Also, I think Lilith’s shield made it worse.
