I wished that someone had said that when engagement/wedding rings were introduced in the early 1900s by a jewelry mogul back then, it was never a requirement until then. They replaced the “gift” a man gave the family to “buy” her.
I don’t think highly of the custom now, but at the time, it arguably served a role of providing a surety that the man wasn’t BSing the woman and meant to follow through. And something valuable to sell if he didn’t. Women’s economic prospects and social attitudes toward being ‘ruined’ were different then.
@ drs:
When asked “How much should the man spend?” The mogul thought a minute and replied “2 months income” it was all to spike sales, no other value to it. History is filled with how the companies out there have shaped our lives. And drained our incomes. The phrase “Buyer Beware” says it all, I’ve noticed it’s rarely said anymore. Also the phrase “Fair Market Value” is an oxymoron, Fair has never been involved, Market is whatever they decide, and Value has done nothing but decline. More so in the last 20 years alone. Hell, when I was a boy, candy bars were a nickle, a bottle of soda was a dime, you could buy 4 loafs of bread for a dollar. One of my current needed medicines cost over $50, but it costs them less than a dollar to make. (blood pressure meds)
@ drs:
I should add that before the ring tradition got started, anything would be fine to give the lady to ask her for her hand, there was a short period between the ending of arranged marriages and the rings was started.
And another one cries at the wedding.
The words “Owned by” are magically hidden on Illias’s “Viviana” ring.

@ Scarsdale:
Through the 19th century dowries were the common practice–from the bride’s family, not the groom’s.

That’s INFLATION. You certainly earn more today as well.
