- Tibor: I swore a great oath in front of two witnesses to help you get that machine going again.
- Scarlet: So what?
- Tibor: A fox must never break a great oath.
- Scarlet: Why not? What happens then?
- Tibor: The King of Avernum would declare me an outlaw. All other foxes on Lavarel would then be allowed to kill me and seize my possessions.
- Scarlet: The King of Avernum?
- Tibor: King Casimir is the spiritual leader of all foxes on Lavarel.
- Scarlet: That’s weird.
- Tibor: If we foxes didn’t have our own culture, we’d only be humans with fur. Wouldn’t that be boring?
- Scarlet: Hmm…
- Scarlet: That means you’ll now do whatever I say?
- Tibor: Only if it helps to fulfill the oath.

“Only if it helps fulfill the oath.” Here we go with the fine print! 😉
Hops
I guess that means no ice cream for lunch.

That fine print is pretty much necessary, imagine a child being in charge.

How much did he make things up? Anyway, the fact that admitted to his crime in front of the general instead of denying it should count for more than his spiritual thing, never mind the fact that if he’s untrustworthy, then there’s no reason to trust his talk about the spiritual leader. Scarlet is a child though, intelligent, but still a child.

Tibor’s figuring out this parenting thing pretty quick!

That was supposed to be in reply to your other comment higher up, not sure why it moved it down here.

The foxes having some specific rules like this may help explaining why the general let him go. He did effectively promised to repay the theft by his services, after all.
Dilandu
Not to mention that general probably didn’t want to spend any more time digging in this confusing civilian matter while he have a war to fight on hands.

Tibor is such an idiot. If only she knew…
His kryptonite is Gingers: former girfriend, little fox kid when trying to kill himself… etc. total sucker.
He’s doomed…

So foxes are running under some kind of… parallel authority? Are they considered citizens of their own fox kingdom (apparently one one?), and only reside in other lands? Considering that we saw foxes serving in military of human nations, this could be… problematic.
Somdudewillson
Most humans operate under several parallel authorities basically at all times — this one is loosely similar to, say, the pope.

this oath will comeback in teh far future to bite your ankle
