- Info box: Several months later.
- Clerk: A former teacher asks for the admission of a ten-year-old girl named Scarlet Carolus. Can you take in another student?
- Teacher: You aren’t serious, are you?
- Clerk: Actually, I am.
- Teacher: I already work ten hours per day. At some point enough is enough!
- Clerk: But Mrs. Mirkning writes that Scarlet is a genius.
- Teacher: Yeah, they all say that. But in the twenty years I’ve been working here, I haven’t come across one yet… Well, maybe Theodor.
- Clerk: All right, I’ll send a rejection letter.
- Teacher: Do that!
- Scarlet: Bad news?
- Silvana Mirkning: Bad news.

He has a point. He can only teach limited number of students. It’s not his fault there are no other teachers.

Actually, this is good news. Scarlet gets to hang out with Julius and Silvana some more, and they’ll very likely do her more good that Professor Grumpenstein would.

“No-one gets to be a genius at my school!”
So this time-skips several months? Is the war over? The story only need the land that Scarlet’s family was living on to have been retaken. Or at least be safe territory. Scarlet still has some money to make in refined Ilumian. What’s the newest “way to make money” that Tibor is onto? Are Scarlet and Jules sharing a room?

I don’t think the teacher is against the idea of having a genius in his school, it’s just that he don’t believe Scarlett is one. As for Tibor, either he has recovered and is working again or presumable Silvana gave him enough to get his food.

A good GATE teacher doesn’t conduct a GATE program based on what they believe in a vacuum. How difficult could it be to get some minion in the Mirknings’ general area to go check this claim out? Particularly knowing that he’s supposed to be serving the crown by educating gifted students?
A pox on this guy. Scarlet, Julius, and Silvana are better off without him.
Crystalgate
What you’re saying should be true, but doesn’t seem to be. If the teacher has an important job of teaching gifted students for the crown, then the crown should probably have afforded a second teacher. The teacher may not have a “minion” that can do his task.

Well, so much for that plan.
Just out of curiosity, how come Silvana Mirkning is the only character to have her full name listed in the comic transcript? Everybody else (including Julius, her son) only has their first name listed.

I think minor characters get that treatment in general? Scarlet’s parents come to mind.
MegaJar
Ah, that makes sense. You’re right, her parents had their full names spelled out as well.

I blame the parents overselling the “genius” of their children. Yes, every kid is special in their own way, but where does that put kids like Scarlet?

In 1968, I was in grade school. I was clever and strong-willed, but I had a problem, I was very near-sighted. I failed my entire second grade, and was put in the special ed class for my third grade. It took a loud argument with my teacher for her to realize I had a problem, she yelled “Read me back what was on the board now!” to which I said “I can’t read it from here” she froze, and told me to walk forward until I could. I went from the middle of the classroom to next to her desk. It took 2 weeks to get my glasses and my desk was right by her desk until I did, I aced the 3rd grade and my 4th!

I assume that Theodor will appear as a character later in the story.

Damn teachers and their desire for a reasonable work environment!
Crystalgate
Either there are gifted students there who aren’t gifted enough and a better vetting system is needed or more teachers/classrooms for gifted students are needed. Either way, I can’t really blame the teacher. Heck, Scarlet may actually be one that require a lot of work.
Resources may also be a factor in this setting, but is it that much more costly to teach gifted students than ordinary ones?
HKMaly
I don’t think this class is supposed to be for the most gifted students. Sure, it’s probably university-level education, but they don’t have enough teachers for actual university … and possibly not enough students wanting to study it either, although apparently they DO have more students than they have teachers for.
