Perhaps the Source crystals have something to do with the matter/energy crossover of the shard coins. It would be like the “upper” class to have introduced a free-to-use monetary system that has slowly been consuming the heat of the planet and now refuses to pay anything for metal coins.
Whatever the field trip is about, it look like they’re safe from bears. Will Scarlet have time to tour an Illuminan refinery? 🙂

Siiiigh because you can’t even imagine natural catastrophe NOT caused by humans. If they really consumed so much energy it affected climate, it took a LOT of effort and is unlikely to be caused by single invention. Now, powering their whole civilization with geothermal sources, with no fossil fuels, no nuclear power and no solar power plants, that MIGHT do it. I still think it’s more likely the planet was terraformed and the terraforming machine broke. That the cold is basically natural state.

I can add that even if you turn a lot of heat into energy (which has its own problems), the energy will be reconverted into heat again once used. For example, practically any energy you put into getting a car moving will eventually end up as heat. The only way to cool a planet down this way would be to have all that energy stored into the crystals or to radiate it out into space.
