A Sky Full of Stars 045

  • Tibor: You seem to be mesmerized by this painting. What’s so special about it?
  • Scarlet: The fruit.
  • Tibor: Really? I don’t think it’s particularly well drawn.
  • Scarlet: But it really existed.
  • Scarlet: All fruits in other paintings are only products of the artist’s imagination. But this fruit really existed.
  • Julius: I wonder how it tasted.
  • Scarlet: It’s like asking how a new color may look like.
  • Julius: Well, I bet it tasted good!
  • Scarlet: I wonder what it’s like…
  • Scarlet: … eating something that tastes good.

  1. How can she know which of these fruits really existed ?

    1. Possibly by the age of the painting and the others being more contemporary.

    2. It was probably mentioned in one of the books she read.

  2. Oh, come on! Tibor may not be the best cook, but he does his best!

    1. Wonder how many dinners she’s had at the Mirkning house?

    2. He’s doing his best with limited options they have. And I’m not talking just about being poor. Even rich can’t eat as well as we do because the ingredients simply don’t exist there.

  3. If they don’t have fruits, where are they getting the dyes for the clothing? Crushed beetles? Fire beets? Otherwise everything would be green from grass dye. If all clothing were dry-clean only, that would cause so many problems.
To live in a world without sugar- any child would think that Scarlet is on the wrong quest. I wonder if she has never had a roast before?
I wonder what’s going on in the painting? “You must pay before eating”?

    1. They could use mineral dyes for the clothes.

    2. You kind of answered your own question, didn’t you? Crushed beetles and beets are both used for dyes in the real world as well. We’ve also seen countless flowers of varying colors, and there are possibly mineral dyes as well. A lot of dyes are also sourced from animals.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_dye
Fruits are actually way less present in most dyes than you would think.

      1. There wouldn’t be that many different species of animals either. I would expect mostly mineral dyes, although it’s possible there are flowers unusable for eating but usable for coloring …

    3. Some dyes come from crushed insects. Some dyes come from non-edible plants. Or minerals, too.
There is more that fire beets and bloomrabi for food, it just have been said that other food are not produced in an amount that is sufficient for feeding everybody. Maybe rich people do eat sometimes other veggies or fruits (not this particular one obvisouly), but it is expensive and rare, and would not feed everybody anyway.

    4. If she had a roast before, she would probably not be asking what eating something that tastes good is like. From what I can gather from the settings page, only a minority of people are able to sometimes eat meat. Since people don’t seem to eat dairy products, raising animals for meat is not feasible either, except maybe for the richest.

  4. Oh, I think the “design” of the drawing has been flipped horizontally from previous page. The fox here is on the left, and was on the right on previous page.
    Not a big deal, though.

    1. While the fox has repositioned, the fruit is definitely facing the same way, so the picture did not simple flip. Nice catch though.

  5. …And Julius took it as a personal challenge, he will not rest until the new quest is fulfilled

  6. The picture must be dated and there has to be recorded history of fruits existing for Scarlet to know that. We also know from the Settings page that almost all history before the big war between Arcadia and Ilium has been lost. This means that the fruits as well as many other plants were lost after that event. So, either resources were only beginning to dwindle during the war or it all happened after (or as a result thereof).

    1. The plants were lost due to weather / climate, not due to the war.

  7. I wonder if the humans are hypoglycemic or perhaps hyperglycemic if they are functioning with a limited number of edible sugars.

    1. You care about SUGAR? Think about other necessary nutrients. Vitamins and so.

      1. I mean it’s all important. your brain runs on glucose after all.

        1. A healthy liver can easily produce enough sugar (glucose) for your brain to function normally, IF there is enough fat or protein available. The down part of this is: This process consumes a part of the food‘s energy and leads to reduced efficiency.

  8. Clever deceptive little girl…
Squeeze this kindness dry and further your evil plans!

    1. at this point if they don’t become enemies for some strange reason , i see a marriage in the far future

      1. Romeo and Juliette wanted to get married… Just saying. I for one think that Julius is a good match with Scarlet.
