  • Civil servant: Hello?
  • Scarlet: Good day. I am Scarlet Carolus, and this is Julius Mirkning. We want to get married.
  • Civil servant: You want to get married?!
  • Julius: Yes. Here are our records.
  • Civil servant: You need to be at least 16 years old to get married.
  • Scarlet: I know. But maybe this will change your mind!
  • Civil servant: What’s this?
  • Scarlet: This is a very rare Ilumian bronze figurine.
  • Civil servant: Is this an attempt at bribery?
  • Scarlet: Yes!
  • Info box: Shortly thereafter.
  • Scarlet: You can’t even bribe a civil servant on this dystopian lump of ice! This is truly the worst of all possible worlds!

  1. well I think we can confidently say that no one will ever accuse Scarlet of being patient

  2. Iliumian, rather than Ilumian?

  3. It’s possible that in this dying world some philosopher has developed an “anti-Leibnitz” philosophy of “this is the worst of all possible worlds.” If there was one, Scarlet had read it, of course.

Also, I love Scarlet’s face in the last panel. 😄

    1. And I love Julius face too! 🙂

      1. And I hadn’t noticed before that her eyes had turned from green to black in anger! 😄

    2. There’s the counter of “This is the best possible world, unfortunately.”

      1. That’s how Leibniz meant it, actually. He was specifically trying to explain why our world is so bad by arguing that anything better would be impossible.

  4. BlackDragonSlayer

Well, it was worth a shot 😛 Wonder if that statue will fetch a pretty penny, if it’s really that rare…

    1. If so, it would be worth a few meals.

  5. At least she’s honest about bribing the guy. Gotta give her that.

  6. Hey, Scarlet? Have you forgotten that you and Tibor are DIRT-POOR? Rather than throwing away that rare and (presumably) very valuable statue on something you’ll be able to do for free in just a few years, maybe you should think about selling it to get some actual money, so you can buy the food and clothes you’ll need to SURVIVE long enough to get married. Just a thought.

    1. Nine-year-old girls in love don’t always do the sensible thing.
      Just a thought.

      1. And at WHAT age do people in love sensible things? I’m not aware of any.

      2. She is at least ten by now – depending on how much time has passed since she got the rejection letter.

    2. Well, she would be marrying rich, so technically speaking she’s being sensible

  7. Nine-year-old girls in love don’t always do the sensible thing.
    Just a thought.

  8. I can’t fault her spirit, but she should have tried cash. 😀 Sometimes the best gifts are the gifts you give yourself. At least Scarlet didn’t bonk the clerk with the statue. She didn’t bonk the clerk, right? Probably just yelling. It’s rare to have someone call their world dystopian. I mean, sure, I’ve heard complaints like that in real life- 2019 onwards was a doozy. But in fiction the characters tend to avoid it.

  9. Is this a subtle hint that we are impatient if we don’t get updates over Christmas and are sad about it? I somehow felt slightly tiny bit guilty after reading this comic.

    1. This gave me chuckle. 😂

  10. Well, she’s honest….

  11. I have honestly no sense of time here. It’s like the story is in fast forward and pausing at random moments, skipping various unknown amounts of time in between.

    1. Welcome to fiction. 😂

    2. Yes, that’s the problem when you want to illustrate the biography of a person and how certain events in her childhood shaped her into the person that she is.

      1. Did you tried narration with year and month?

  12. Intelligence and common sense is truly two different things. Julius looks a bit distressed, so I’m thinking they got a serious scolding, which left no impression on Scarlet though. That aside, it is nice to see that Scarlet if nothing else is happy with Julius, happiness is something she really needs.

  13. Well, at least it’s not the sort of dystopian lump of ice where children get the gallows for attempted bribery…

  14. I wonder if this hinting at the idea that Scarlet is going to die by the end of it?
She’s trying to rush a lot of things in her attempts to ready herself. Maybe she’s rushing towards her death?

  15. Sooo…. on Lavarel, wolves deliver litters of 1…2 cubs? (On earth, it’s 3…8.) So somehow, wolves are just humans with fur, I guess.

    1. Basically its inevitable for sapient bipedal with large brain.

    2. There’s a reason litter sizes tend lower as size, intelligence, and lifespan tend higher. Each kid gets more and more expensive (and I don’t mean just in the monetary sense, but in terms of nutrition and attention).

      1. Not speaking about the fact that the space in womb is limited. Although, most important limit is space on way out. Compared to most mammals, humans are born prematurely, barely able to survive outside of womb … but they can’t stay longer because they wouldn’t fit. This problem is caused by bipedal locomotion and intelligence and the wolves here would therefore be subject to it as well.

And we are not talking weeks. Anthropologists actually assume human gestation should be 21 months.

  16. do we need to worry about the reason for them to want to be married?

  17. Can’t bribe a civil servant?
    Absolutely scandalous!
