  1. (Forgets the lyrics to “My gun’s bigger than your gun”, sung to the tune of the Oscar Myer Weiner jingle.)
So people are just getting shot in the street now? As soon as the first shot is fired, anything Scarlet does is in self defense.
Scarlet and Tibor working at a mine, I can see that. Scarlet working as a guard, now that I wouldn’t have guessed. Lots of apartment space available though not much lighting. Or heating. I’m sure that someone as small as Scarlet can find things to do if there’s a cave system in the mining area. Hopefully not in “toiletry transportation.”

    1. You are projecting modern values on early industrial era. In XIX century, it was perfectly fine even for democratic nations to use military to suppress civilian riots – often by shooting and bayonetting everyone who did not comply immediately. And even now, when martial law declared in case of emergency – and there IS an emergency in Velis – the rioters could be shot, and “self-defense” argument would only get the “armed citizen” to be shot. Because even in modern times, nations understood, that at some situation killing the rioters is a lesser evil than allowing situation to get out of hands.

      1. And all that people have to do 99% of the time is behave themselves. You’re right about all of that. Maybe not the projecting modern values part. “Modern” values would hold that the Pinkertons (a group known for being guards for construction projects like mining) are about as legitimate enforcers of legality as a group of Not Hells Angels as guards. In summation, so what? “It doesn’t matter how you play the game, only that you outrun everyone chasing you.” Scarlet is armed, cheeky, and makes a smaller and harder to hit target. 🙂 But that was then and the story’s moved the duo to a mining town. Carts to pull, holes to sleep in, and water to deliver. As well as bathhouses, saloons, and crooked gambling dens. Which are places to keep Tibor and Scarlet away from for different reasons!
I was wrong, it was the tune of the Ken L Ration dog food commercial. :p

        1. Basically the Velis government is acting reasonably. They organized distribution of emergency supllies – either from prepared stocks, or confiscated from farmers – so every citizen would at least have enough to survive. Of course, hungry crowd is not the most reasonable thing around; it could be extremely prone to all kind of rumors like “there is not enough for everyone!” (even if, in fact, here is) and could start to just plunder supplies. In that case, having a few dozens of rioters rad-burned through their brains would be lesser evil than disturbing the distribution that kept hundreds or thousands alive.

  2. Well, FINALLY a society that actually make preparations & maintain strict control over situation! A relieft to see.

    1. The people of Samaris have become reckless, because they haven’t had a famine (or a bad harvest) in 50 years (SFOS #55). Velis is further north and they are used to it.
Guards need people who know how to use weapons. There probably aren’t many of them.

  3. Does Scarlet have small tits now? She’s not a little girl anymore!

    1. Scarlet seems to be a little taller than one head below Tibor who in turn sometimes look shorter than human males and sometimes about as tall. Even if we set Tibor’s height as average human male, the average woman is more in line of half a head shorter than the average man than a full head shorter. Girls also grow very little in height from the teens to adulthood compared to boys and looking at some tables for boys and girls, 13 is a likely age for Scarlet. With a thick winter coat on, it’s perfectly reasonable that her breasts are not noticeable yet.

      1. It is “unlikely” that there’s going to be nudity in Eternal Summer. Though if there was going to be one of those “mountain spa hot bath scenes” it may have had a higher chance of happening with Scarlet and Julius. It’s also true that S&T are in the mountains now. And miners will have to bathe somewhere.

        1. I don’t expect nudity, of course. I’m just interested in how Scarlet gets older. It seems to me that in panel 6 with Scarlet, the outline of the breast is noticeable under the sweater; though it might just be a crease in her clothes.

Probably her real quest for the Machine won’t start until she’s a 17-18 year old girl like on the Cover

        2. I think Scarlet is better off not aging to full adulthood. That has to do with the length of the story. Activating the MOES does not require her to go to college. So what’s a few months, a year or so? The storyline is about activating the machine. there’s a lot of stuff that can happen after that, too. People turning it off, people trying to destroy it, different stations, different activation codes, unbuilt important locations, etc. Scarlet should only reach the young to mid adult level as seen on the cover, in the last act. For all we know that might involve space travel or some other enforced stay away from the goal.

    2. What a weird thing to say.

  4. So where or what is “Velis”? A habitation, obviously, but it doesn’t appear in the Glossary. A map of this world, or at least the known parts of it, would be handy.

  5. I bet Scarlet could look very intimidating if she wants to.
