- Scarlet: Hello everyone! My name is Scarlet Carolus, and I’m one of the new guards for the storehouses. But that’s not the reason for my visit.
- Scarlet: I’ve come to ask if any of you have any books you could lend me. I’m particularly interested in books about machinery, weapons or the history of Lavarel.
- Scarlet: I’m also interested in old legends about mysterious artifacts. If you can help me, please come to the guard house. I need as much information as possible to save Lavarel!
- Scarlet: Goodbye!
- Gale: What the heck was that?
- Miner: Better show her your little library, Gale. Or do you want to end up on the hit list of that crazy firehead?

That’s a very clean and modern commissary. It looks better than some lunch rooms, even some classrooms that I’ve seen. They have a menu? That’s either a surprise introduction of things like spices or a list of bad jokes. “Wednesday food.” “Beet surprise.” “Second Monday.” “Beets, beets and cold beets.” (Explicit serving times of the 4 different days that they’re allowed to turn the stove on for one hour.)
They’ve even managed to keep a living plant indoors, how flashy. How often will it be eaten from when the servings are too small?
Scarlet has no stealth in her at all. She just walked in and ratted herself out. This will not go well when 1) food goes missing from the supply shed. 2) Scarlet/Tibor gives in to eating while guarding the supply shed from the inside. And hopefully 3) when Scarlet finds a second “illuminum refinery” and uses it to open a crevasse under the food storage.

You underestimate how many ways can you prepare the same food if you just want SOME change. It’s going to be something like if only thing you have is eggs so the menu is scrambled eggs, omelette, soft-boiled eggs, hard-boiled eggs and sunny side up.
The plant is probably not just inedible but poisonous.
Vicious Sand
How can you sunny side up beets? Some foods just aren’t that versatile. Unless you’re making ink. The menu would have the same monocrop problem that Lavarel has.
Kintrex
Few foods are as versatile as eggs, but with beets you can at least have them roasted, pureed, or pickled, and those would all be quite different from each other.

I admire Scarlet’s directness. I wonder what kind of books Gale has in his library? I’m guessing Scarlet will find out soon!

Being able to ask for what you want without shame is a skill—though of course, some people can go too far with it 😛

“Beet surprise” makes me think of Fawlty Towers. If you don’t like beet, admit defeat!

This was meant for Vicious Sand, sorry.

I’d like to blame the Grondians for the lack of variety, but the problems run much deeper than the fact that you just can’t get a Waldorf Salad in this town.

I hope so! 💕

she knows what she wants, and cares not how she looks in getting it
this is why I love fiery redheads :3

Scarled has already earned a reputation as a “crazy firehead” who has her own “hit list”. 😐
Graybeard
This only makes sense if there has been enough of a time skip for Scarlet to know her way around the mining camp a bit, and probably to have been by some of the crew, if not Gale. A week or ten days would probably suffice.
Vicious Sand
What? This is all first day stuff. Why are some so intent on hitting the fast forward button?
Hegel-Marx
My bet is somewhere in between. Two or three days might be enough. 👮♀️😎
HKMaly
It’s possible that just being guard is enough to immediately assume she must be crazy and have her own hit list. Or at least joke about it.

By the way, Scarlet has the same scarf and hat from table #20, three or four years ago.
They look like wool, but there are no sheep in that world. What is it made of? And what do they actually make their clothes out of?
No fur or leather. I doubt there is cotton in that world, also flax. Maybe hemp or some similar plant.
Maybe they have the technology to make artificial fibers, probably from cellulose – there are plenty of trees around.

Scarlet hasn’t changed in personality much since she was six and went on a borrowing spree for books while Tibor was working. She has made good improvements though, back when she was six she studied more or less everything arbitrarily, now she knows what she wants to focus on. The weapons part is interesting though, she must think she may have to destroy some golems or otherwise use violence in her search.
Hegel-Marx
But who knows, in the end it might be important to know what loess soil is! 🤣 (See SFOS, #16)
HKMaly
I would also expect she will need to use violence in her search.
Vicious Sand
Scarlet’s got a lot of dirty guttersniping to catch up on. “Violence is a choice, and the Grondians have made theirs.” Scarlet’s moving farther away from the Grondian front lines, so unless there’s armed unrest, theft, or a wild animal attack, violence looks to be a low possibility.
Crystalgate
Your comment made me realize that Scarlet would want to look at her cellar and I think it is now under Grondar control, so yeah, she does well to learn violence.
Old Brit
As a guard, a knowledge of weapons and applied violence would be useful.
Also, weapons on this world use energy crystals, so knowledge of their workings may be relevant to understanding the machine of eternal summer.
