A Sky Full of Stars 076

  • Gale Nenawa: Not that I’m complaining, but heroes out to save the world usually side with the hungry townsfolk in situations like this.
  • Scarlet: In the real world, there’s no author who rewards you for your moral purity.
  • Scarlet: Lavarel would be doomed once and for all if Grondar won the war. Tibor, Julius and I would never be able to return to Milik.
  • Gale Nenawa: Julius?
  • Scarlet: Julius Mirkning, my husband.
  • Gale Nenawa: Your husband?!
  • Scarlet: Well, we’re not officially married.
  • Scarlet: Here, that’s him. Julius is the sweetest boy in the whole world!
  • Gale Nenawa: If you say so, it must be true.
  • Scarlet: We want celebrate our official wedding in front of the Machine. On the 1st of July 1.
  • Gale Nenawa: The 1st of July 1?
  • Scarlet: We’ll introduce a new calendar.
  • Gale Nenawa: Will I also be invited?
  • Scarlet: Of course!

  1. Looks like Scarlet browbeat the shopkeeper into submission. They have the cogs.

  2. I believe there is a word missing in the second to last frame.

  3. The 1st of July 1?

    1. I think the “1” is meant to denote the year, which is why Scarlet is saying she’s going to introduce a new calendar – not for the months, but for the years.

    2. I’m surprised Scarlet isn’t going to start her calendar with year 0. She is letting all of mathematics down if she starts at 1.

      1. She starts the calendar with year zero, but marries in year one.

  4. BlackDragonSlayer

Scarlet sure has lofty goals 😛

  5. Scarlet is just speedrunning a golden age, isn’t she?

  6. I am extremely glad, Scarlet is not boring cliched character that would help poor, because “morality”. She is reasonable. Of course she feels compassion, but compassion can’t save everyone. In the bigger picture, it’s nor always good to help everyone who is in need.

    1. Helping everyone who is in need is good only if you actually CAN help everyone who is in need. TRYING to help everyone and ending up helping noone is the usual outcome when you let compassion do the decisions.

  7. Really really hoping Gale gets to be there for the wedding

Novil I’ll probably cry if he doesn’t get to

    1. I really hope Julius will be there for the wedding.

  8. Isn’t that 1st of Warmflow, 1? Or is the point that she’d name a month after Julius?

    1. You are right, this needs to be fixed. @Novil

    2. I think the point is that she’d name it after Julius.

    3. Considering that Scarlet says “we’ll introduce a new calendar”, this should be assumed on purpose and not a mistake. July after Julius sounds like a plausible explanation. Hopefully, Julius will be alive when the starvation ends.

  9. Julius is gonna be the BBEG in thr end, right?

  10. Awwww! It’s so sweet that Scarlet calls Julius her husband! 🥰

Julius has a strong moral urge to help anyone in need. When they first met, three or four years ago, on board #27, his mother says: “Julius, how many times do I have to tell you that we can’t save the whole world!” Scarlet then says: “I can!”. But Scarlet really thinks about saving the world as such, and Julius has a moral urge to help everyone (according to his mother, not just pretty girls!) – that’s not the same.

There could be conflict between the two because of this difference. I can imagine Julius as the leader of the rebels who want to steal food from the rich who are hoarding it and distribute it to the poor.

But the moral leader and the pragmatic politician could finally find a way to cooperate, because they need each other. (We know this problem very well in our world! Thousands of books have been written about it. There are probably some on Lavarel and Scarlet has read them. — The situations are different, because our problem on Earth is not a lack of basic resources, but distribution. But it could also happen if we continue to degrade the environment and frivolously consume non-renewable resources.)

I wrote, in “Time to Speculacte”, that Scarlet would have to make her way to her house in Milik, to enter the basement and then the tunnel leading to the Machine. That will require followers. She will need soldiers. “In a world that is sinking into ruin, you can certainly find humans, foxes and wolves who will believe in the idea that a girl will bring them salvation.” Gale can be the first among them (after Tibor, who has to help because of the oath he took).

  11. The calendar has always been a little mixed up anyway. Why not have September as the 7th (sept) month? December as the 10th (deca) month? October as the 8th (octo) month? etc. 🙂
At least Scarlet is staying faithful to Julius, as opposed to embracing the life led by women in certain kinds of mining towns on Earth. Not that she wouldn’t look alright as a saloon girl, (referencing the Tanya Mousekowitz dance number.) She’s more of a pistol girl then the stilettos those dresses are for though. Anyway, we don’t get to see if that’s a picture or an engraved cameo. While the classic-photograph chemical pictures are a thing, they need a lot of chemicals, and silver apparently. Lavarel should have a high level of tabletop electronics, assuming it’s still a sci-fi story, and a laser engraver the size of a toaster oven is a real world thing. It’s got to be less powerful than a laser pistol.

    1. Julios’ father is a painter (#33). This portrait may have been engraved or painted.

    2. Well, the September USED to be seventh moon, but then someone moved start of year …

      1. Damn Julius Caesar and his modern innovations! Let me chat my friend Brutus about this…

  12. She’s plowing forward, full steam ahead, with lots of ambitious ideas that she wants to implement. This feels like it’s stuffed chock full of event flags, deadly and otherwise. I think she’s about to hit a big brick wall of inconvenient setbacks.

  13. i don’t like to be that guy , but i can reconize a death flag when i see one , and ” I will marry … when i get back from …” is the mother of all the DF, but at this point Julius got more flags than the UN.

    1. It sounds to me more like Scarlet’s romance is being used as story filler. What does she talk to other people about when she has the time? This, I guess. As for death flags, Julius has (some) food to eat. It’s Scarlet who’s due to be knocked out and robbed, as a storehouse guard. Or she chooses to leave her post to save someone from a cave-in. Or get robbed from because the cave-in is a set-up to get her out of the storehouse. The predicted “S. gives food away to the starving” is too easy. Now, if she got in trouble for taking some cuttings and an energy crystal to build a grow-light and small garden, that would be her abusing her position. As far s we know, Julius will keep. He’ll just be a little thinner.

    2. That would hurt. That would really hurt. There is no reason to believe there won’t be a happy ending, and there can’t be one with either Scarlet or Julius dying in the course of the comic. We’ve seen important characters die in Gaia, Fnaqevy and Elxre (ROT13), but they didn’t have the importance of Julius in keeping the reader happy and hopeful. Smashing that hope at the end would tarnish the entire story.

If Julius dies, he’ll either be revived by the machine or end up in a kind of heaven where, contrary to religious concepts of heaven, people can be actually sure to meet there again. In the machine’s brain perhaps, as electronically as it gets in the world of Scarlet.

  14. Shouldn’t it be “we want to celebrate” rather than “we want celebrate”?
