I’ve removed the latest page A Sky Full of Stars 084 because people didn’t understand its context and nothing happens in it that’s important for the rest of the story.
Text box: One month later.
Scarlet: I’m so sorry…
Scarlet: Soon there won’t be any animals left on Lavarel…
The look on her face says, to me, “What’s the point of this?” or maybe “…and that’s the last I have to read.” Staring at a closed book.
ToBeFree
If the book was closed, its upper border would be as long as the lower one, extending beyond the pages inside. That is not the case, though. While the similarity of the lines is confusing and the hands may be too close to each other, it does seem like the book is meant to be open.
Don’t let the fact you didn’t hear anything while reading the comics confuse you, comics is purely visual medium :-).
She DID made noise but the animal didn’t reacted. Maybe it’s really because it’s young and inexperienced as Klaus suggested. Or maybe too tired/hungry to run. Or both.
The way the animal is depicted I am thinking it is a young one, since it has proportions reminiscent of a half-grown puppy. Maybe implying the loss of its parents. Hence potentially inexperienced, making it at least easier prey.
Or I’m reading too much into it.
Still hoping for a way to subscribe to comment replies though.
In fact, situation could go worse. They are still burying their dead, not *eating* them. The main problem with famines is not only the famine itself, many of them come with epidemics. Those four guys, Hunger, War, Death and the Plague. We have here three of them.
About silent hunting, the animal seems an easy target. Scarlet seems ashamed to kill it.
Hungry/desperate animals are more focused on foraging and less on their surroundings. I’m a deer hunter and they’re less alert in rough winters. Moreover, snow CAN muffle footsteps; deer are often easier to hear in dry fall leaves than in soft winter snow.
Whether or not Scarlet could literally sneak up on a small animal in the snow isn’t really relevant; it’s a vignette demonstrating the growth of desperation.
Argh, that was meant as a reply to HKMaly in the thread above.

… read that just after raising the point the animal could be hungry on my own. Thanks for confirmation, I was just guessing while you have actual experience with it.
You mean, they are still burying their dead during day. We can’t be sure what will happen to those dead in night, but it’s true that when situation gets worse they won’t bother burying them.
With a bit of luck plague will be missing from the four guys, if this is an old space colony, and no settler did bring in some nasty viruses beforehand.
With Scarlet having said that, it’s time to look at the plants section of the settings page, namely following; “While bloomrabi is very resilient, firebeets will likely perish if temperatures continue to drop in the next decades. This would mean the end to all animal life on Lavarel.”
I take it that means the humans can produce Bloomrabi instead of Firebeats and thus survive for longer. I do not know why that hasn’t already been done, but a guess would be that Firebeats are more calorie efficient. If so, starvation will now kill humans until the Bloomrabi production is sufficient and then they will have stable food situation again.
Even if Scarlett is able to fix the climate, all lost species will remain lost. There will be an explosion of new species (not animals if they are all gone though), but said explosion still takes a long time compared to human lives.
Even if Scarlett is able to fix the climate, all lost species will remain lost.
Some might be recovered due to limited populations surviving in favorable locations.
There is also the question how quickly the climate changes. But right now it is depicted like a fast, catastrophic collapse.
Well, she finally tasted meat, and given her character she would surely have preferred to eat some toxic plant again rather than helping the extinction.
Given her personality, she will eat meat if necessary, just like she did now. And most likely, the question of what she will prefer will be irrelevant as she would be lucky to have ONE option to eat most of the time.
Realistically the ground would be frozen after such a long time with temperatures below zero. Before the invention of powered tools the dead were stored in Receiving Vaults till spring, if they died in winter, because it was really hard to dig a grave in frozen ground. Impossible with only the shown shovels.
Probably a rewrite, which IMO is a good thing. Sometimes stuff just doesn’t work like it’s supposed to and that just means you have to accept that and have a do-over. Takes a lot of courage to acknowledge that, so hopefully the next page will have the work done to get this story what it deserves.
I figured she was no one in particular and it as just meant as a bit of characterization and world building. Like, on their journey they make stops, stay with people that let them for a while, but there is death everywhere from the famine and Scarlet has the empathy to genuinely care about the acquintances made along the way.
Unfortunately, humans are capable of many things that they wouldn’t do without the compulsion to survive. For example, the reason for their escape or killing the wolf cub.
🙁
The only thing you’re doing wrong is second-guessing.
It’s clear that Scarlet’s Misery Tour is supposed to drive her to activate the machine at any cost. It’s a motivation setup for when she has to choose between say, saving someone’s life by not activating the machine or, to her, saving everyone’s life by activating the machine. In such a case Page 84 proves that Scarlet knows best then.
Well, I guess it moved too fast from “There’s a sad scene” to “Let’s live together, total strangers!”

Hm, dark.

What does Scarlet have on panel 5? A tablet!? So far we’ve only seen books.
They don’t use guns for hunting. They conserve energy, and besides, the energy beam can blow away a large part of a small animal’s body.
The situation is getting worse. Winter is still here, spring is probably not near. And what if the next harvest is also poor?

It’s a book.

I’m surprised they found this animal … and that it didn’t tried to run away. Scarlet can’t be that good hunter to not make any noise on SNOW.

Whaddaya mean she can’t be, you just saw her do it.

Animals are the most innocent of all of us. They shouldn’t be hurt.

It’s possible Bloomrabi can only be consumed processed (cooked) and is therefore unusable for most animals.
And they might actually have MORE Bloomrabi when they stop using land trying to grow Firebeats.

The animal to be slaughtered looks so cute. 🙁

removed the latest page!? Weird. Will you add a page to explain what happened in the meantime and who that dying female fox was?

The fox had no tag, but Scarlet and Tibor did, so she was most likely just a nameless female fox who’s dying.

Pity, the removed page was interesting. Possibly a bit confusing but I assumed that was deliberate and we’d learn more with the following updates.

This isn’t a wolf cub. It’s a hoofed animal. Possibly a species native specifically to Lavarel.
