Panel 5 sure seems to show Scarlet looking suspiciously at her. I think it’s a fair guess Iona is being nice, and Scarlet’s just too analytical to miss it, and not socialized enough to be gracious about it.

I’d guess that Iona just made a blunder and Scarlet picked up on it instantly, but the blunder was not intentional. I used to be both a strong chess player and (pardon the brag) a very good scholastic chess coach, and I’ve seen almost this exact scenario among my stronger chess kids,. Of course, none of them were Scarlet!

Yeah, that’s equally plausible. Either way, Scarlet’s both smart enough to quickly learn and analyze a game, and socially awkward enough to not always interpret or handle things graciously.

Scarlet seems much better already and frankly, she seemed better the earlier panel already. I think most of the healing has been done with time already. If so, Scarlet was lucky she healed before she starved herself to death.

I wouldn’t get my hopes up. As anyone who knows someone with depression knows, it’s not because you can smile when you’re in company that you’re healed.

I’d also like to repeat how much I love the art in this comic. Baako’s final panel is just so perfectly expressive of a teenager, right down to the emotive ears. Absolute home run by Novil in choose Elli to bring his storytelling vision to life.

It’s going to be hard to play against someone with that level of math sense and logic who can predict and develop counters for every move ten moves in advance in almost any game that doesn’t rely on blind chance, start her out on ‘Snakes and Ladders’ 🙂
