Machine Girl 038

Don’t you hate it when you post your proof of the Goldbach conjecture on arXiv and nobody reads it?
  • Cyril: Scarlet! You know it’s forbidden to walk around with a gun in Kirkiok.
  • Scarlet: I prefer not to take any risks in Arkvale South.
  • Cyril: What are you up to anyway?
  • Scarlet: I’m distributing these leaflets. One per home.
  • Cyril: “Facts about the Machine of Eternal Summer – The passageway in… blah blah blah“ Hey, what’s that formula at the bottom of the page?
  • Scarlet: That’s a function that’s continuous everywhere but differentiable nowhere.
  • Cyril: Why on Lavarel would anyone care about that?
  • Scarlet: Because I discovered it. It disproves a conjecture by famous mathematician Zolt Cator.
  • Cyril: Really? Shouldn’t you rather send a discovery like that to the Ministry of Education or something?
  • Scarlet: I sent several letters to various institutions in Oris, but never got any reply.

  1. Ceterum censeo f(x) = sum of a^n * cos(b^n * x)

  2. I like how Scarlet is meanwhile being known to the police as harmless genius. Basically, they admonish her for carrying a gun, but believe her when she tells them about such a formula.

I dislike that the story is jumping so much. The places abruptly change and this makes me loose track of what the characters are doing.

  3. Can we please get a timeline of the events from the start up to this panel? I’m slowly getting lost.

    1. I’ve made a simple one here, showing Chapter, Page, Scarlet’s approximate age, the location, and a brief description of the page’s events.

      1. Great job! But I think the seasons changing throughout this chapter mean that Scarlet has been living in Kirkiok for 2 years now (it’s her 3rd summer here), and she’s around 15 already. Here’s a copy of what I posted under MG-036:

The year Scarlet arrived to Kirkiok:
MG#011-013 – there are green leaves on trees, so it’s spring or summer. Still the same year as the spring shown in SFOS#085.
MG#015 – “one week later” – the leaves are yellow now, which means the autumn. This also means MG#011-013 were in late summer.
MG#022-023 – leaves are still yellow – still the same autumn.
MG#025 panel 2 – leaves are falling, so it’s late autumn.
MG#025 panel 3 – snow, the winter began.

        Scarlet’s 2nd year in Kirkiok:
MG#025 panel 4 – the leaves are green again – spring or summer.
        MG#029-031 – snow – winter.

        Scarlet’s 3rd year in Kirkiok:
MG#035-036 – green leaves – spring or summer.

        1. Not conclusive. There’s lots of trees that are green in winter. Also, it’s always winter. They haven’t been in Kirkiok for than a month or so.

  4. I can’t help but imagine “Dang it, Scarlet” has become a common refrain at the police station.

  5. I once read mythologist Bruce Campbell describe God as a circle whose center was everywhere but whose circumference was nowhere.

Did Scarlet just mathematically prove the existence of God?
