The Machine of Eternal Summer 020

  • Tibor: Phew.
  • Tibor: All right, change of plans. First of all, I’ll try to make amends with the family I robbed. Then we’ll see.
  • Jehona Shardyk: ?
  • Tibor: Is this art or worthless junk? … Oh well, if they don‘t like it, they can throw it away.
  • Tibor: … Pfff

  1. Seems like every day in his life is a monday.

  2. BlackDragonSlayer

Is that a dusty bed, or just super fluffy?

    1. Everybody, probably: The bed is super dusty. Tibor is super fluffy.

  3. He is both dusty and super fluffy.

  4. We don’t know if he’s dropping off a second letter, but I think we’re supposed to think that he’s picking up the letter from before.
At this point, I hope the art/junk is a clue to the Summer Machine, just to get to the main plot in some way. There’s been too many series out there that have a title that has nothing to do with the events in the story.
Oh, sure, a gun. Gotta have one of those. Don’t want to get killed by bandits on your way to buy noose rope. A high INT score, Tibor does not have.

    1. This is the same gun Tibor used in the hold-up where he got the money to settle his debt. The fact he did not use it just now suggests to me it is not in operable condition – he was bluffing during the hold-up.

Or Tibor is just an idiot. That’s always possible.

      1. He fired the gun into the air, so it was operable.

      2. BlackDragonSlayer

My guess is that if he used the gun on himself, there… wouldn’t be much left.

      3. The gun and the ‘is this art or worthless junk’ are not the same item. He’s collecting whatever modest posessions he has and will give them to Scarlet’s family to pawn off is my guess. It’s not very clear, but you can see it in panel 6, next to the lower part of the book, that’s the ‘junk’ sticking out. *Additionally* he’s taking his gun. I also needed a few takes to understand what was going on, after he picked up the letter.

    2. He’s picking up the letter he originally intended to send after his suicide. No sense sending the letter now. That’s clearly why she’s puzzled, that he’s taking the letter back with no explanation.

  5. We’re getting somewhere. This change of plans is definitely better than the original plan.

That said, Marik said he’ll give the guards the money if they come knocking. A confession of everything that happened should get them knocking. It’s likely Tibor won’t do that since he has decided he does want to live after all.

    1. Well, it’s probably better plan but it’s still surprising turn.

      1. Yes, if you’re determined to do something, then falling out of a tree unharmed shouldn’t stop you. That’s not something to take so frivolously that you should go “Oops, changed my mind.” about.

        1. FuryoftheStars

Falling out of the tree and being snagged by the rope (even if _mostly_ unharmed) likely caused his life to flash before his eyes and made him realize exactly what it was he was getting ready to do. He was likely super, super depressed earlier and was just running on autopilot after that let down by the girl of his dreams. I mean, it is said that people who attempt suicide (and survive) often regret the decision.

        2. The decision to commit suicide is often done in a temporary state of feeling that would get better if the person held on for a bit. Tibor changing his mind like that is not surprising. The decision was also made without any real thought, his reasoning is full of holes.

  6. This seems like a natural place to end a chapter, but it is not necessarily where it’s going to happen. Question for Novil: will the last page of a chapter have any kind of marker, e,g. the way Tom S does it on Gunnerkrigg Court?

    1. No, I don’t put markers on the last page of a chapter.

    2. From https://www.sandraandwoo.com/scarlet/2024/02/29/publication-schedule/ we already know that there will be 18 more pages in this chapter.
