- Soldier: Who are you?!
- Tibor: We’re… Hch! Hch!… refugees from Milik!
- Soldier: Follow me. I’ll take you to General Yerim. I’m sure he’ll be interested in your story.
- Soldier: Not a peep until the general has time for you!

At least it can’t get any worse. Right? RIGHT?!?!
HKMaly
It definitely can. You should know to not ask questions like that.
Manabi
Scarlet’s expression in that first panel is great! Tibor might be exhausted but he did a great job, even picking Scarlet up to help her over that pit in that panel.
BlackDragonSlayer
I agree. Definitely a great “YIKES” expression.
Vicious Sand
They’re still firing at Tibor? Geez, the guy can’t seem to die.
Wait for the General? But she’ll see everything. She’ll see the Big Board. Are they going to be interrogated, or are they going to overhear something important?
I thought that Scarlet was going to wander the world for a few years in a timeskip, if she was supposed to catch up to the title page. But I guess she could be drafted instead. It can’t be so bad that they’d Tanya the Evil her, right? Granted that could be pretty funny if she was kept as a spunky kid.
HKMaly
If this is surprise attack, she may have better idea about what’s happening than the general.
She may wander the world WHILE being drafted. Don’t you know? “Join the Army; travel to exotic, distant lands; meet exciting, unusual people and kill them.”
Dilandu
General on the above-ground command facility, lack of any serious entrenchment… This base clearly did not anticipate any major attack. Even a simple mortars would allow attackers to completely destroy the defenders.
Crystalgate
Mortars may not exist, there’s a good chance the magitek in this world is not good at movement. That said, this base absolutely should have been prepared for an attack considering the condition of the world.
Old Brit
Not even a quick pat down, or any attempt to verify their identity.
If they were working for the enemy, it’d be “Goodby General”.
Dilandu
Worse than that; Tibor have pistol holster on his side.
Fred
We are not shown every single step (nor every breath they take, or every oath they make, despite us watching them). It is perfectly safe to assume they’ve been checked somewhere between panels 3 and 5.
Tadrix
This has been true only for the last century or two. In earlier times, physical proximity to do harm was much more important (even with the ranged weapons of the time), and patting down (or shaking one’s sleeves) was only necessary to find concealed daggers. And despite the existence of early mortars (that weren’t accurate by any means), commanding officers were pretty much present on battlefields. By the way, we haven’t seen any gunpowder firearms in this comic (yet) and their energy weapons seem to be direct-fire only (so far). Mortars or many forms of artillery might not even exist.
Dilandu
Unlikely. Soldiers were shown to dig trenches and wear helmets – which indicate at least SOME concerns about shrapnel and ballistic weaponry.
HKMaly
This is effectively post-apocalyptic world. They are LOSING technology. Most likely, they DO know the gunpowder firearms technology, but it’s possible it’s rare and considered impractical.
Dilandu
Ballistic weaponry could not be considered impractical; the advantages of reaching the enemy behind wall or some other cover are just too big.

Why does Kirilia have an army base in Kirkiok? Is Kirkiok in Kirilia (sp?) or is Milik a protectorate of Kirilia? If Milik is a country between Kirilia and the place the hostiles came from it must be pretty small. Like postage stamp sized
Crystalgate
Milik is a Town in Kirilia. There’s a glossary you can check for these kinds of questions.
Mark
Energy weapons but no obvious signs of motorised transport. This is a very odd world
Dilandu
Considering the lack of edible resources – and it was stated that there are only two plants that humans and animals could eat, and only one is widespread enough to feed the livestock – the mechanical transport would basically be the only practical solution.
Crystalgate
The technology is magitek. We don’t know what it can and cannot do, but since it’s firing energy bolts instead of bullets or arrows, there’s a chance the magitek is not good at movement.
Dilandu
Ballistic weaponry could not be considered impractical; the advantages of reaching the enemy behind wall or some other cover are just too big.
Crystalgate
I did not suggest it may be impractical, I suggested magitek may not allow for mortars. It is likely that a later strip disproves that idea though. It’s also likely that this comic uses Star Wars logic.

Some of the commenters here need to read the About and Setting sections of the website, which answer many of their questions.
FuryoftheStars
I have a feeling Scarlet will say something about seeing the machine, which the General is likely to dismiss. She’s far too young right now to be recruited.
Dilandu
If it could generate enough power to fire energy bolts, it could generate enough power to heat the water and power the steam engine. Or just to rotate the electric motor.
Manabi
Looking at the comic again I noticed that Elli even made sure to show that the bottom of Scarlet’s skirt is wet from crossing the river. I love little details like that, they really make the image great.

Unless this is a really rag-tag world where every bandit chief is a “general”, the size of this outpost wouldn’t warrant a leader higher than captain (if it’s a company of 150-200 men) or a major/lt colonel (if it’s a battalion of 600-1000 men). Either way, information from refugees/prisoners would be handled by the appropriate S2 who would be a lieutenant or captain.
You know that this camp is small because the enemy raiders wouldn’t risk attacking anything that outnumbered them vastly.
