Today a little more to read. Unfortunately our editor Neveko was not online during the last week so there might be a grammatical error or weird phrase in the text of the letter.
I’m worrying that some of you might not understand what’s going on in the last panel, so here is an explanation:
Cloud is watching Twilight to translate its dialog into Burmese and to later send the translation to his cousin. “Ankles” is a word that is mentioned during the pictured scene at the beginning of the movie. Cloud does not know the Burmese translation for “ankles” so he is asking his mother for it.
When I was going to elementary school I played the great adventure game “Indiana Jones and the the Last Crusade”, which was completely in English, together with my mother on the Atari ST. Reading and understanding whole English sentences was a bit 😉 above my mental capabilities at that time, so she had to translate all the dialog for me while playing.

- Ye Thuza: Cloud, you’ve got a letter from your cousin Win Thiri Shwan!
- Cloud: Yay!
- Letter: Hi Cloudy,
thank you so much for your kind letter ^^. I’m so happy for you that you’re such a good student and that you have so many friends. Sandra really seems to like you, doesn’t she? 😉 Just be nice to her or I’ll smack you! 😉 I’m now going to school again too! We’re back in our old village. It’s quite a lot of work to repair all the damaged houses. But some of them are almost finished already! When I’m done studying I’m always busy helping. It’s soooo nice here!! 🙂 One month ago great uncle signed a ceasefire with the military. Now the soldiers don’t bother us anymore! Except for you-know-who and his men. They’re just as mean to us as they were before. Why are some people so evil? :’-(
And many! many! thanks for all the great movies you sent us!! The man from the post office took some of them away. But just a few! Uncle Myint Arun always translated everything for us when we were watching them. I want to learn English now too! Because I want to know exactly what Edward <3 and Bella ^^ are saying in Twilight! It’s so unfair that I could see Twilight only once together with my uncle….. When I wanted to watch it again he said that the movie was totally dumb and that he never wants to watch it again! HE is dumb!!! Twilight is the best movie of all time!!!! The best part was when Edward and Bella looked at each other in the forest and Edward said “And so the lion fell in love with the lamb…” and Bella replied with “What a stupid lamb…” Do you like Twilight so much too?
Hugs and kisses
Win Thiri Shwan
- Cloud: Mom, what’s “ankles” in Burmese?
|
correction: I couldn’t do it for my cousin.
Assuming this cousin is under the age of twelve for reasons including my loathing of Twilight. Didn’t like the movie, loathed the books, and I wouldn’t be able to stomach a second viewing for translation for a cousin, let alone my own sanity.
This comic is really cute though, and I have to admit, Cloud has courage to sit through such…”simplistic” forms of entertainment.
lots of ups and downs 😉 mostly ups, just, after the author comments
– twilight 9_9 …. sorry, only personal opinion, don’t let it affect you
+ cloud being such a pal to put himself through that 😉
– bad people in myanmar…
+ Indy! 😀
+ ST! XD XD
@Sir Chaos
Thats what Im saying, you and I know that, But do Cuba, Burma or Iran know that? I doubt It, for they democracy could be The Final Solution, New Jerusalem, or the best thing since Ice Cream, I mean is better but not GOOD good, I think I made myself clear
The girl’s uncle is most wise. She should listen to him.
Ok, that turned out wrong. It’s supposed to look like this:
Actually, considering that the letter is supposed to be a translation from one of the languages least like English that there is, the “wierd phrases” actally add to it. The fact that it was unintentional adds even more to the comic.
sorry again.
@ The Occupant
She explains in the letter that her uncle translated it for her as they watched,
Thanks for explaining the last panel, since I’ve never watched Twilight, nor do I ever plan on it.
I like how Win Thiri calls him “Cloudy”. 🙂
First panel is my overall favorite to look at, but I like Mom’s face in the last panel.
Making fun of Twilight = Good
Not making fun of the book too = bad
Mention Twilight, and you get many many comments…
I also like how she calls him Cloudy. It’s the way a name like that, with a meaning, should work, isn’t it? – Of course, all or most names actually have meaning. What does Win Thiri Shwan mean?
“Win Thiri” means “bright gold” in Burmese. Shwan has no specific meaning.
Flim, your comment just crossed the line between critique and “hate”.
I can understand everyone who doesn’t like it and i don’t like it either
(haven’t watched it yet, as I said)
but that’s just offensive >_>’
@Someone
True, it could have been worded better. The comment was flagged for Novil to have the final say in deleting it, leaving it, or editing it.
I saw twilight, and it was horrible; no need to use such language though.
I’m so jealous of you and your ability to write and speak and read multiple languages T_T
I wish I had had the chance to learn a second one when I was a little kid…
Hmm.. Wonders if you still have that Atari ST.. Wish I could get my Old scribbles of the Old Atari systems..
I like how he puts emoticons in hand-written letters.
I don’t HATE Twilight, I just don’t think it deserves the rabid fanbase. Seriously…when I think Twilight, I think…NOTHING happens. Seriously…for about 75% of the book it’s just Bella waxing sentimental about how in love she is. Of course, that’s exactly what a girl her age would do, but STILL!!
Plus Ms. Meyer couldn’t write a decent action scene if her life depended on it. She can take an entire chapter to describe a kiss, but throw in a fight and it must be rushed through in two paragraphs or less even if it’s the climax of the freaking story!
Despite those complaints though, I wasn’t disgusted enough to throw the book down. I even read the entire series, so I can’t really say she’s a BAD writer, just a very mediocre one. The sparkly vampires was the only element I found somewhat original.
That said, Cloud is a real sport for watching the movie through all the times it will take to send a translation in Burmese. It is soooo not a ‘guy’ movie.
I would think that on paper she would need to use internet lingo smilies, and “<3", but hey, that's just me.
Was forced to see the first two movies by GF. At the middle of the first I fell asleep. (after 10 minutes when I had to watch it again on DVD) The second one was somewhat funny though, totally unintentional I think, but it makes a nice drinking game. Take one shot everytime you see a half-naked werewolf-indian XD
Aww, Cloud’s so sweet! I like his character even more now!
Her uncle was right about Twilight.
blech, Twilight is the WORST $#$#$#%$ vampire movie/book franchise o’ all time!!!!! i would rather get eaten alive by flesh-eating maggots then e’er watch tha’ movie again…..bad enough me own wife forced me to watch it…or else she would…..well, u know….cut me off!!!!
You know, at first I though when Cloud was watching Twilight, he was going to write to break her ankles for liking it.
“except for you-know-who and his men”
Voldemort and the Death Eaters were harassing her, that is why sh turned to such horrific-ness as Twilight
Cloud is such a sweet cousin! xD <3
@ Mystery Penguin:
I don’t think it’s really a problem?
I mean if she likes it she likes it. ^^
I don’t like Twilight myself, but I’m a little over the hatred too. A lot of people I know just take the ‘creepy’ parts in their stride, and know the difference between reality and fiction.
Now I’m wracking my brains trying to mention when ‘ankles’ was used. XD
Aww, my childhood wasn’t Indiana Jones, but Final Fantasy X, also with my mother translating all the cutscenes. I really think she came to like the story, too! 😀 A great way to learn English, by the way.
Ben wrote:
Really? I thought Germany had some of the strictest censorship laws in europe? Of course, that means censored films rather than banned films much of the time, since releasing a cut-down version is preferable to the studios than no release at all.
Anyway. Poor Cloud, having to watch a movie for young girls. He must really like his cousin.
…And then I think of the guy who monitors their mail having to read a transcription of it, and it just cheers me right up. Serves him right, says I.
I still don’t get the “ankles” joke. There is no mention of ankles in the beginning of the movie. Unless it’s in the credits?
twillight? alright his cousin in a girl for sure.
