Oh Novil, you know how to write a strip that will provoke part of the audience to an extent that they can feed a lava moat! 😀
Welcome, the new big little sister who fucks Sandra’s Dad
And this, folks, continues the trend of making Sandra the character with most common sense of this strip.
I think what’s missing for me is that we haven’t heard Richard and Hitomi discussing their intentions for a long term relationship. They were dating, then Richard had to go away, and then Hitomi shows up as a surprise, and then suddenly everyone (including Hitomi) is assuming that they will get married. But it feels like the cart getting ahead of the horse if we never see the two of them actually discuss it or even some sort of announcement that implies they’ve had that conversation.
Just sayin.
@ Grijan:
Not like that is much of a challenge, though. 😛
Good to see Sandra is welcoming of Hitomi.
I think it would be good to see a few strips of Sandra processing the change. The addition of a new family member, especially in the role of mother (father’s wife = mother, even if they don’t press for it) is challenging on young people, and it would enrich the story to see that.
Everyone should have a Hitomi… *sigh*
Don’t worry, Hitomi. Parents are very frequently outgrown by their children; as a step-parent, you just might be experiencing it sooner.
you know, i was kinda joking when i said she wanted to be Sandra’s new mom… how old is she anyway? will she be a constant in the cast? cant be that young since she was working on a cosplay maid cafe… uh…

What do you think the previous strip was, he consider wither she could be an authority figure, is PART of talking though the implication implication of a long term relationship.
Hitomi is still a teenager….right?

Mid 20s 25-27 is what seem to fit but it hasn’t been explicitly stated
it only about a 10 to 15 year age gap between them
@ Roguebfl:
All we really know about Hitomi’s age is that she is past 10th grade (i.e. older than 16), as she said she failed that grade and started working at the cafe. How long she’s been at the cafe has never been stated, so it is possible that Hitomi is 17 years old.
I think it is unlikely, though. It doesn’t seem like the angle Novil is going for.
For those wondering about Hitomi and Richard’s long term plans and discussing them, chances are they have already come to an understanding of sorts: Hitomi and Richard began dating immediately after she expressed disappointment that her former crush had no interest in having a wife and/or children, and that a husband who spends no time with their family isn’t a man in her opinion. She lost interest in someone and didn’t date said person because they didn’t want to get married and have kids.
Then she starts dating Richard, who is sympathetic to her opinions. As such they already sort of know where one another are on the issue, at least in broad terms, and it wouldn’t be a big leap to say that they spoke about that more off-screen.
Also, chances are Sandra is going to have some half-siblings in the future if Hitomi’s prior statements are any indication. I think there is a lot of storytelling potential for Sandra interacting with Hitomi and future siblings, and hope we will get to see it some day. This whole subplot has a ton of potential and I hope it gets developed moving forward.
I guess Hitomi hasn’t seen those anime/manga where the mom/big sister is visibly shorter than her daughter(s)/little sister(s), if not looks so young that she could pass for an actual child?
Don’t worry Hitomi. You could give Sandra an actual little sister, IYKWIM *wink*wink* (insert Mr. Bean’s meme here)
I’m 24 and 5’00” tall. Hitomi is now my new favorite character in this comic.
My grandfather was very tall, and I inherited this gene from him. I haven’t measured myself in a while, but I’m about 12 1/2 years old and I’m at probably at least 5′ 04″, if not taller.
Little sister,
you are older, you’re related and you’re a girl.
Mad Marie wrote:
Well, Richard did declare to love her just as he was dragged away. And she travelled over to surprise knowing how he felt. And last strip she seemed to be considering herself in the role of Sandra’s parent (notably without freaking Richard out) – so I guess there has been some defining their relationship going on behind the scenes.
I guess if Novil had found a “funny” way to have them have the talk you’re missing to see, he would have made such a strip. Or he just likes to leave their exact relationship not entirely defined.

I’m pretty sure that we did establish that she’s way older than she looks by now.

Well like non-asians are any good at guessing asian age…
Little sister, just as I said! 😀
Paeris Kiran wrote:
At a very minimum she seems to be old enough for her parent to not have any objections of her bringing home a random stra
ynger and later traveling half across the globe to be with him. So I think it’s a safe assumption that she’s well beyond maturity age – and that’s 20 years for Japan. She’s shown very used to and very comfortable with making her own decisions without even considering her parents might have any say in it – and not in a rebel-teenager way more like a confident adult.
Thus my guess is that she definitely at least in her mid-twenties.
And don’t forget that nobody (not Sandra, not Ye Tuza, nor Richard nor anyone) ever made a jab about an age-gap or complained about her being to young for him. I’m pretty sure any teenage girl would almost certainly tell her Dad that she’s not happy with him dating a girl only a few years her senior.
@ Paeris Kiran:
I have a friend that lives in Thailand. I hadn’t seen him for years when he sent me some pics of him and his family. The first was just of this girl , she looked maybe 14, that I thought was his daughter. The next was of him and her and two small kids. I guess she wasn’t his daughter and was a lot older than she looked.
@ clickbait:
Well assuming Sandra is like 13-14 Richard can be like 35-40… Hitomi can easily be 25-30 should not be much issue.
Japanese ladies tend to be shorter and look younger then western ladies.
Hitomi-neechan? Hitomi-neesan? Hitomi-oneesan? Hitomi-oneesama?
Only took me about 1206 strips before i realised Sandra didn’t have a mom, got there eventually.

No doubt they just ended up forgetting about aspects from so early on. I know that past event have rebounded to me in ways that felt like a first despite them being well known prior (more so in Gaia than here, but it still stands)

Well, they have immediately hit it off and seem to share several interests, and Sandra’s entire social circle likes and welcomes Hitomi. She taking stepmom role through a big sister lens appears to be to everyone’s satisfaction and quite appropriate given their respective ages and personalities. Sandra has coped with Julie’s loss in a good way, barring the occasional nightmare, and made herself at peace with Richard dating again.
Moreover, Sandra is rather mature for her age in most regards, and in a very stable and loving relationship herself with her soulmate, up to the point it seems unrealistic teens with that high a level of romantic and sexual attraction have not yet progressed beyond first base. Ofc, they may well have done more offscreen, as much as Ye Thuza’s threatening veto about teen pregnancies would allow.
In all likelihood Sandra and Cloud shall marry or at least start living together soon after graduation, and they have already agreed they shall ‘probably’ do so. This inevitably influences her perspective about her Dad finding a new partner. There seems to be little realistic justification for stepmom-stepdaughter ‘you’re not my mom’ teen drama with Dad’s new, super-cute cohabiting girlfriend/fiancee.
@ Titan: Pretty sure that’s an entire category on PornHub and all affiliated/competing sites.
@ Roguebfl:
@ Name:
Yep, previous interactions during their Japanese dating and since her arrival show they already agreed they are in a long-term relationship, shall form a family with Sandra, and are going to have children of their own. They already started living together, and Hitomi came with enough baggage for that.
The only uncertain thing is whether they have progressed to discussing the technical issues of their relationship, such as making wedding plans, whether Hitomi shall be a housewife or seek employment (if the latter, the service sector seems the natural choice, esp. anything related to anime/manga culture), and getting Hitomi a green card.
We also don’t know if Cloud already met his future in-law or not. We saw Larisa and Yuna hanging around while dealing with the lava crisis, so almost surely they got introduced.
Asian people in general tend to look younger than they are, it’s a biological trait from the… Race? Ethnic group? Anyways, so Hitomi is by all means much older than she looks, it’s entirely possible she’s almost 30 but looks like she’s 16.
@ Paeris Kiran:
A lot of people meet my daughter in law (who’s 100% Han Chinese – confirmed) & assume she’s 10-13 years younger than she is by her looks.
My own mother had a lot of American Asian in her (i.e.-American Indian) & it was reflected in her looks. Many thought she was my older sister….
So it is here: the Eastern Asian/American Indian folks seemingly look younger for a lot longer than they appear (trust me on this) & thus Tomi looks so much younger.
Coupled with a healthy diet & a young at heart teenage girl mentality, Tomi reflects that vibrant youthfulness that’s actually going to be necessary in her & Rich’s marriage & family.
On my part, I wish them well….👍
Jim
And this one, remembering her mom….in a nightmare soothed by Woo’s presence… http://www.sandraandwoo.com/2019/12/30/1141-aquarium/

At the beginning of our relationship, my wife and I discussed a lot the general ideas of philosophy, religion, child rearing, our dreams, hopes and fears. When I finally proposed, it was in form: “So, when should we go and buy engagement rings?” (In Finland, both parties exchange rings ar engagement, and the bridegroom gives the bride an additional ring at the wedding. I think the first part alludes to the traditional Germanic custom of treating the engagement as a contract between families, and the latter is a Christian addition.) I dared to do that because I knew we had, for a long time, already considered it a done deal in our discussions that we would be marrying.
For me, it looks a lot like the same. When you are starting to discuss the practicalities of married life in earnest, the proposal is just a technicality.
