A Sky Full of Stars 027

  • Tibor: I’m cold. Let’s eat the rest at home.
  • Julius: Wow, you’re pretty! Your hair glows like fire!
  • Scarlet: Thanks.
  • Julius: Why are you begging?
  • Scarlet: Because my adoptive father broke his leg and can’t work anymore.
  • Julius: Mom, can we help the poor girl and her father?
  • Silvana Mirkning: Sure. Here, give them a few Shards.
  • Julius: No, I mean really help!
  • Silvana Mirkning: Julius, how many times do I have to tell you that we can’t save the whole world!
  • Scarlet: I can!
  • Julius and Silvana Mirkning: What?!
Do you like Scarlet?

  1. Lmao, their reaction is precious.

  2. Oooh, helpful normals. I was expecting some street tough-toffs foxes in flowerprint pants offering to turn tricks for/with Scarlet. 🙂 (They would have to negotiate with Mr Blasty, leading into S. and T. going bounty hunting.)
Scarlet’s got the end of a plan, but not how to get across enemy lines, to the house, and work on what only might be the Machine, assuming it’s not a small refinery like the mail reply said. Just why does Scarlet’s hair glow? Radiation? Anyone got a Geiger counter?

    1. Isn’t radiation green or blue? On the other hand, we don’t know what kind of energy the machine uses. Back on first hand, she wasn’t that close or spent that much time there …

      1. Radioactive beet farm soil. Red beets, red hair. What was the machine supposed to refine, and how? Grain grinder, metal smelter to draw out impurities, or good ol’ radioactive deposit that no one ever checked for contamination of since moving into the abandoned buildings?
Personally, I like her hair as it’s drawn on this page.

      2. Radiation doesn’t have a color we can perceive, unless you’re talking about visible light.

    2. It might also just be because her hair colour is pretty rare. In our world, red hair is already considered Rare and quite Unique, and in a world with dwindling population it might be even more so?

  3. BlackDragonSlayer

Mmmm, seems like the answer might be “opportunity” 😉 An apprenticeship for Scarlet, maybe? These two seem like they’re from a well-connected family.

  4. Ok. Either she just started forming party or they will consider her crazy. Hmmm … would they give her more money if they think she’s crazy?

    1. They need Tibor to write up a full Chosen One pamphlet. Fund the war orphan’s efforts to return to her farm and bury the bodies of her parents, and investigate the machine that could maybe be a hot steam boiler of some sort. You can’t heat the world if you don’t try. Sure, they could do some actual research on illuminum refinery and what it looks like, or they could lead a covert mission back to the farm house behind enemy lines, investigate the machine annnnd then get shot by the companions for the deaths along the way when it turns out to be an illuminum refinery.

    2. Not party. New religion.

  5. Despite being one of those expecting the boots to belong to someone on the neutral-at-best-but-more-likely-not-good side of things, I am happy to see that it is actually someone kind.

As an aside, what happened to their signs? they were there in the previous strip showing the boots approaching, but are gone now.

In any case, I find it very intriguing that Scarlet’s air is sufficiently distinctive and bright enough to look like it glows under certain light conditions to be noteworthy. I mean I’m not assuming that it is actually literally glowing: I have seen people in real life with anime-sky-blue dying that certainly looks like it is glowing under some lights even though in darkness it most certainly is not. Although if it is, in fact, actually glowing (as in emitting light in and of itself), that’d be very interesting. Very interesting indeed.

    1. Novil is not always predictable. He is not afraid from steering away from tropes, but he’s also not afraid of adhering to them either, so it can be hard to predict his stories.

    2. >> As an aside, what happened to their signs?

      Fixed.

  6. Ah, this is the young man whose hand she is holding on the cover. The start of a beautiful relationship.

  7. This seems to be the one Scarlet was holding hands with in the cover. You may want to take a look at it again.
Julius does seem to care a lot about helping people judging from his mother’s comment, so he may be more receptive to Scarlet’s idea of the eternal machine, especially since he’s a child as well. The being a child part means his ability to help is limited though.

    1. Is there another cover than this one?

        1. Thank you! I totally forgot!

  8. I’m semi-expecting something like this: she explains (in her inimitable style), and then Julius says “Oh! Like in the story my Uncle Axel wrote?”

  9. Hi. I’m crazy on the sidewalk. And you?

  10. Aaaand now Scarlet begins to talk as a prophet, gather supporters and followers, and create a cult, even a new religion. The gods are angry with Lavarel, but give them a chance to redeem themselves.
(I like that turn of events.)
